Lean Sustainment Initiative

The Lean Sustainment Initiative (LSI) grew out of the success of two earlier CTPID programs. The International Motor Vehicle Program's 1985-90 assessment of the international automotive industry resulted in the articulation of lean production principles. The lean concept set off a multi-industry transformation of manufacturing and production in the United States.

In 1993, the U.S. Air Force and MIT began the Lean Aircraft Initiative (LAI) research program to apply the lean enterprise model to the aerospace industry. Based on the knowledge gained through LAI, the Lean Sustainment Research Project was created in 1997 as a joint project of Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command, Air Force ManTech, and MIT.

The U.S. military today has fewer resources for logistics support. Consequently, current sustainment operations-maintenance, repair, overhaul, and other necessary routine support-require sweeping changes. Further, the impact of any waste created in the sustainment environment today is significantly greater than in the past. LS is undertaking the research that the Air Force agile combat support community needs to initiate fundamental change. LS's research goal is to help design and implement a world class lean U.S. Air Force sustainment system for the early 21st century.

LSI has completed an initial project stage, established a baseline understanding of the USAF sustainment system, and produced several case studies and executive summaries.

Current program goals are to facilitate the collaborative process, involve public and private sustainment stakeholders, develop specific research areas for long term research, and begin collaborative development of a 21st century maximum value sustainment system model.
