MIT
Information Quality Program (MITIQ)
The MITIQ
Program, launched in 2002, serves the public and private sectors in
their need for high-quality information. A new industry consortium is
exploring customer-centric information quality management (CCIQM). The
founding member is Acxiom Corporation,
a customer and information management solutions firm.
MITIQ researchers
develop and test new knowledge in the information quality field as well
as develop information quality benchmarking standards. The new program
continues to develop the information quality concept as a multi-dimensional
and contextual phenomenon.
Program Director Richard
Wang began defining the characteristics that make information a strategic
tool more than 15 years ago. MITIQ is an outgrowth of MIT's Total Data
Quality Management (TDQM) Program that Wang and the School of Management's
J.N. Maguire Information Technology Professor Stuart Madnick founded in
1989.
MITIQ provides a comprehensive
body of information-quality knowledge and methods that
- Deliver the benefits
of improved information quality such as making well-informed strategic
decisions, increasing market share, and reducing operating expenses;
- Give program participants
the understanding and skills to develop information quality programs
and projects and to solve and prevent information quality problems;
- Enable participants
to solve current information quality problems and prevent future problems;
- Advance the information
quality field through innovative, cutting-edge research and collaboration
with government and industry; and
- Develop information
quality curriculum for academic programs and certification program for
information quality professionals.
Outreach
Wang teaches a three-day
executive IQ course at MIT titled "Information Quality: Principles
and Implementation" that focuses on the following items:
- Information as
a product;
- Continuous improvement
cycles for information quality; and
- How to conduct
information quality audits.
In conjunction with
this MIT Professional Education Program, he offers an IQ certification
program for information quality professionals. Information Quality Management
I (IQM-I): Principles and Foundations, was first offered in 2003. IQM-I
will be offered again in November 2003 and 2004. IQM-II: Theory in Action,
currently under development, will be offered in 2004.
Wang also leads the
annual IQ Workshop hosted by U.C. Berkeley's Fisher Center for Information
Technology and Marketplace Transformation, an MITIQ partner. The workshop
is held in winter.
