Technology and Management Program

A common vision unites the Technology and Policy Program (TPP), which offers a master of science degree, and the Technology, Management, and Policy Program (TMP), which offers a doctor of philosophy degree. They emphasize dual competency in a technical area and in management and policy as the basis for effective design of large-scale systems.

The Technology, Management, and Policy program is a multi-disciplinary doctoral program that encourages research intended to improve the methods used in defining and implementing policies for the intelligent use of technology. Each student's program focuses simultaneously on a technology discipline and an applied social science such as economics, management, law, or political science. This bridging between disciplines distinguishes TMP from programs confined to a single disciplinary perspective.

Doctoral students work with a variety of MIT research centers and educational programs that are concerned with the study of large-scale systems. Research at CTPID's Technology, Business, and Environment (TBE) Program broadened the educational experience of this PhD candidate:

"As a graduate researcher, TBE allowed me to ground my theoretical training in economic and organizational behavior in the real world experiences of firms dealing with their impact on the natural environment.

"In the process, TBE has enhanced both the theoretical sophistication and the general applicability of my doctoral research."

Michael Lenox
Technology, Management, and Policy PhD candidate

TPP and TMP, along with CTPID's research programs, are part of MIT's new Engineering Systems Division (ESD). Through ESD, nine research centers and educational programs will jointly develop and support integrative educational programs aimed at preparing engineering students to take leadership roles.
