Welcome to the third edition of Culture Shock! An Online Forum on Popular Culture. The magazine represents the fruit of the semester-long efforts of a group of MIT writers enrolled in a section of 21W.731, Writing and Experience, in the fall of 2003. During the many weeks of our collaboration, we read, watched videos, listened to music, talked, thought, wrote, and re-wrote as we grappled with the elements and impact of popular culture on all our lives, developing critical acumen and furthering the ability to express observations, insights, and arguments about the significance of everything that surrounds us in the twenty-first-century. The magazine also includes the work of some high school students from the Odyssey School in South Boston. They were paired with the MIT students in my class as e-mail pen pals during the semester, and they were invited to submit their writing on popular culture to Culture Shock! Semiotics was our method; essays were our product. We present them to you now for your reading pleasure.
