Popular Culture
by Jennifer Allen
Our youth in the world today play a very important role. This is even true when considering the great variety of culture. I think culture effects everybody, from music to clothes to cell phones. It’s all around us; we are the very fabric that makes up our culture.
Unfortunately the world we live in is obsessed with material objects, such as clothes and cell phones. This is common since we need clothes to wear and phones to talk on. Material things play a very large part in the culture industry today. Often times it appears everyone wants to jump on the "bandwagon" and do what everyone else is doing. For example clothes, often you see someone on the street wearing a certain brand of sneakers or article of clothing and either you go out and buy them or wish you could.
A lot of advertisements influence consumers to go out and buy all these "cool products" like cell phones, clothes, shoes, and etc. Advertisers are smart and ruthless people who not only know how to catch the regular adult consumers’ attention but the youths’ eyes too. One of the most important things advertisers use are famous actors and singers to sell their product. For example, in Pepsi commercials you see Brittney Spears drinking Pepsi while performing, which is entertaining and many people relate to Pepsi. When young kids see Brittney, they want to be like her too. Advertisers also use basketball stars to sell sneakers and other products by showing consumers that playing basketball well with that certain kind of sneaker will automatically make you better in the game as well.
Cell phones are important things to me to add to this thriving culture. Cell phones are one of the most useful devices around. I am sure there was a time and will be a time in the future that you will be stranded or in need of help and unable to have access to a telephone. So it is sensible to have a cell phone in case of an emergency, right? They’re convenient and a lifesaver.
Most of the items we own are important and vital to our everyday life and are considered to be popular culture items.
