Language Assignment 1 ( also in [ PDF | PS ] )

1. Download the assignment-1 sound file from the haiti section webpage. (http://web.mit.edu/d-lab/fall-2003/haiti/files/assign1.mp3) and listen.

a. Try to catch as many words as possible, and write them down in Creole, in an attempt to practice spelling and syntax and word recognition and meaning.

Ti Frè: Bonjou Mitou.

Mitou: Oo, bonjou Ti Frè. Ban-m nouvèl ou?

Ti Frè: M'pa pli mal. M'ap etidye en pe anglè. E ou menm, kijan ou ye?

Mitou: M'la, m'ap kenbe.

Ti Frè: E machin ou an, Kijan l'ap woule?

Mitou: Gras a Dye (Dieu), l'ap woule byen.

Ti Frè: Good morning Mitou.

Mitou: Oh, Good morning Ti Frè. What news of you?

Ti Frè: I'm alright (not bad). I'm studying some english. And you, how are you?

Mitou: I'm here, I'm hanging in there.

Ti Frè: And your car, how's it riding (driving)?

Mitou: Thanks to God, it's driving well.

b. Answer the following questions:

i. What is the name of the female voice?

==> Mitou

ii. What is the name of the male voice?

==> Ti Frè

iii. Which person gave an informative response? What question triggered it?

==> Ti Frè gave an informative response ( 'studying english' ) to Mitou's question ( 'What news of you' )

iv. Which person gave a subjective response? What question triggered it?

==> Mitou gave a subjective response ( 'I'm here, I'm hanging in there' ) to Ti Frè's question ( 'How are you' )

v. Was there mention of someone or something else? What? And what about?

==> Yes, Ti Frè asked Mitou about how her car driving, to which she responded that the car was driving fine.
