Late in Thursday night's game, with the game precariously close in score, Omar at short made the defensive play of the game, scooping up a hard-hit grounder and in one motion stepping on second base and throwing to first to turn a double-play that reminded some of his teammates of his rhyming counterpart, Nomar, who plays for another team in town.
The Clippers' offense wasn't too shabby, either, particularly Dwayne, who went 4-for-4 with three 3-run homeruns, a double, 9 RBIs, and four runs scored. Eric (4-for-4) and Robert (3-for-5) also smacked homeruns, Dan went 3-for-3, Keith 3-for-4, and Neal 3-for-5.
Pitcher Lisa recorded two strikeouts, and a throw from the outfield gunned down a runner trying to score with catcher Will applying the tag.
Despite their best efforts--on a wet field that propelled both runners and fielders flat on their backs when they took a running step--the Clippers couldn't quite hold off the non-loafing Oafers, and their record fell to .500.
Oafers 25, Clippers 21
This was definitely not the way it was supposed to be. First the Clippers almost had to forfeit the game because team members were late to the game. Without time for batting practice or warm-ups, the team just didn't have their game faces on, and ground balls found their way through the infield, fly balls dropped, errors were committed and after one inning it was 13-0 in favor of the Objects. With rainclouds overhead, the team quickly started praying for a downpour but even the weather wasn't on their side. The Clippers stopped trying to keep track of the score after the second, and the umpire invoked the mercy rule to end the game after five innings.
As Stephanie commented after the debacle, even if we'd played our very best, we still probably wouldn't have beat these guys--literally guys, too, no women took the field for their team--they had stellar pitching, defense and offense, and clearly should have been playing in a higher division.
The one bright spot was Dwayne, who took up right where he left off last week, hitting a 3-run homer in his only at-bat during the 5-inning game, an awe-inspiring blast to right that accounted for the Clippers only scoring.
Compact Objects ~26, Clippers 3
On one of the hottest nights of the summer, on a rock-hard field that produced prodigious bounces, both teams felt the heat and see-sawed their way into extra innings--with the Clippers finally tilting the score in their favor 21-20.
The top part of the Clippers order was almost impossible for the Ts to retire. Zeke went 4-for-4 with a single, two doubles and a homerun. Omar had two triples and a double, Dwayne two singles and two triples, Nelson two singles and a homerun, and Manuel a single, double and triple. Dan and Soc both socked homeruns, and Alice doubled in the bottom of the eighth, then scored the winning run when Dan singled her home.
Defensively, Will made some key putouts on deep fly balls in right, as did Neal, Dwayne and Zeke. Manuel, Omar, Dan and Dave helped anchor the infield, and Lisa pitched a complete game, with a key strikeout in the top of the eighth.

Marge and Homers made the difference in the rematch between the Clippers and the Blood-Sucking Contractors. With seconds left before the Clippers were to forfeit the game due to only having 8 players, Alice ran over to an adjoining field and returned with Marge, who had been wandering around looking for her regular team.
With a legal roster in place, the Clippers lost no time in getting going, setting down the side in order in the first (with Marge making the last put-out at third) and scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning.
In the third, roommates Robert and Dave hit back-to-back solo homers, and Nelson clocked a three-run homer in the fifth, those five runs providing the winning margin. Solid offense was provided also by Zeke (double), Will (single, double), Alice (single, triple), and Stan (two singles). Frank, Lisa and Noel (4th inning replacement for Marge) each provided a single.
Defensively, the Clippers remained focused. Lisa bounced back after a line-drive bounced off her ribs, and infielders and outfielders alike snared line-drives and pop-ups and scooped up grounders, and even turned a double-play.

The Clippers expected a long high-scoring game based on their previous experience with the Oafers, when the two teams combined for 46 runs in a 25-21 Clippers loss. What they got was a pitcher's duel--with 38 less runs--and another Clipper loss. The Clippers jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning and after that each pitcher recorded goose-eggs for 4 1/2 straight innings until the bottom of the 6th, when an Oafer connected for a 3-run homerun and a 5-3 win.
The game featured a put-out from Neal, as he fielded a single in centerfield and threw a strike to Manuel to cut down a runner at home plate. Manuel was involved later in catching a leadoff Oafer in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd, and Will also picked a difficult throw at first base.
Perhaps the best part was the surprise picnic following the game, compliments of Elisa for Barry's birthday, consisting of pizza and soothing liquid delectables.
