Astronomy is a beautiful science where you can see physical laws in action. Having run my high school's astronomy group for two years (in my junior and senior years), I have an appreciation both for the science and for trying to organize a group to go to observe. Still, it's well worth the effort.

My school's astronomy group web page (not updated since my junior year due to restructuring of how the web page was handled) is available at http://www.vestal.stier.org/vhs/activity/science/astronomy.htm. It doesn't have much of use right now, since most of the articles were written rather immaturely by me. :)

If you're trying to plan a group outing, I have a brief summary of what's involved here.

I'm always open to talk about astronomy, although my background isn't that terribly good. Besides my involvement with my school's astronomy course, I've had a few courses that didn't really cover the observational element at all. Thus, I don't know my constellations; I only know why they're there and about how stars work. Hopefully, an education at MIT will give me more knowledge in both areas. :)

As with any topic I'm interested in, people should feel free to contact me. Other than that, have

    Some links:
  • Astronomy Magazine, a great source for finding out about events and such. The website seems a bit bandwidth-heavy, but it has a lot of good information.
  • Sky & Telescope Magazine has a good web page that is at times out-of-date, but their magazine is excellent. Lots of good stuff there.
  • Kopernik Observatory, one of the largest observatories in the north-east, located right near my hometown, Binghamton, NY (well, actually the small suburb of Vestal, but no one's really heard of either!). Kopernik is a great place to go to stargaze - lots of clear skies, a friendly staff, and a nice environment. Well worth a trip there if you're in the area, or even travelling through it.
  • Group astronomy. My own little page on organizing a group trip to observe, after some experiences with my school's Astronomy Group. I hope this might be useful if you're planning a group trip to do some stargazing.
  • Vestal High School's Astronomy Group, although that's a very out-of-date page. It discusses some of the things we've done before, but really isn't that useful currently. Included for the sake of completion. :)
