Developing Shared Home Behavior Datasets to Advance HCI and Ubiquitous Computing Research

Call For Participants

We seek participants for a one-day workshop focused on advancing the creation and dissemination of shared home behavior sensor datasets for use by researchers in HCI, artificial intelligence, product design, psychology, and medicine. These datasets might be used to gain insight on creating new context-sensitive ubiquitous computing systems that operate in the home environment.

The goal of the workshop is to assemble resources that attendees and others in the community can use to advance their research. High quality, freely available datasets documenting home behavior could accelerate research because obtaining data from homes is typically a logistically challenging and costly endeavor.

During the first half of the workshop, participants will present their experiences using or developing shared datasets, or explain why existing shared resources are insufficient for their needs. In the second half, participants will engage in critical evaluation of currently available and planned data resources. Discussion will serve to establish future directions for improving the availability and utility of shared datasets for HCI and ubiquitous computing research.

Anyone interested in participating should submit a position paper of 2-4 pages, in the CHI Extended Abstracts format, to datasets-www@mit.edu describing their research interests and any relevant work in this area. Submissions are due November 15, 2008. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop and for one or more days of the CHI 2009 conference. Workshop fees for participants is estimated to be $175 for a one-day workshop.
