until 13:30. After taking a bath and writing some post cards,
ate lunch at 15:30. At 16:30, went to town with Bill & his
girl. We took an hour-long ride on the canal in Goteburg, then
went for ice cream in one of Goteburg's many beautiful parks.
A bird whitewashed on me. Got home at 21:00, had a light
supper, showed slides, went to bed at 22:45.

Hi, everybody - I'm sorry I haven't written you an air letter
before this, but time flies so quickly. As you will see by my
postcards, I got here in Goteborg the night of June 25. I am
staying with Bill Fredlund's family. Only Bill's father speaks
any English at all, so when Bill is at work it is quite amusing
to see Bill's mother and I try to communicate with each other.
bill has two younger brothers - 8 and 12 years old. The whole
family has been just swell to me. The morning of the 26th,
Bill's father and brother took me on a tour of the city. By
European standards, Gothenburg is quite young - only 300 years
old. It is a beautiful city, spotlessly clean with several
very modern buildings. Especially nice are the many huge parks
in and around the city. Next to them Central park is a dump.
The afternoon of the 26th, Bill and his girl took me to see the
city. we went on a boat ride through the canals and harbor of
the city.

It took me awhile to get used to the mealtimes -- Breakfast
between 8:00 and 11:00, dinner at 5:00 (tea at about 1;00), and
sandwiches and coffee at 11:00 p.m. (this meal is a genuine
smorgasbord). Yesterday I went to a nearby zoo with Bill's two
younger brothers. It is one of the best I have seen - very
clean, natural settings, many animals and birds. In the
afternoon went to the North Sea coast near Goteborg. It is
amazingly like the Maine coast, rocky, barren, beautiful.
After supper Bill and I went with Bill's girl and one of her
friends to the Goteburg amusement park. It is the largest in
the world except for Tivoli in Kobenhavn, where I was a few
days ago. We went on the rides and danced. At 12:00 midnight
we went back to Bill's girl's house, where we had tea and
sandwiches and danced until 2 in the morning. It was really a
wonderful evening.

It isn't dark here at this time of year until about 11:00 p.m.,
and by 2;00 in the morning dawn has already begun to break.
That really throws me off my schedule.
I'll leave Monday July 1st to begin my trip back to Belgium.
Since I'll be visiting many towns in Holland and Germany, I'll
not get back to Brussels until the 9th, when Claudine's exams
will be finished.
As I have said, your mail hasn't yet caught up with me. If not
before, I'll get it upon my return to Brussels (where I trust
you are sending it all), and then I'll answer the letters.
Love to you all, Dave

Hi everybody - Well, I finally caught up with your letters when
I arrived here in Brussels day before yesterday. Not quite all
of them, though, for Claudine sent 4 of them to Sweden which
haven't yet gotten back. I just got one form you in the mail
today, Mum. I'm glad you had such a good time on your vacation.
I suppose that I shouldn't say I expected you to win the golf
prize, but I know you too well to expect anything less.
Bill, what's this I hear about your getting a new car? These
American capitalists! I thought you'd never part with that
limousine out back we were all so proud of. Which Phyll is
this you went up to Maine to see?! (If you won't be at home
this summer, send me your address so I can write to you. Since
I have Sis's address, I'll write to her when I finish this
letter).
Since my postcards will be a few weeks in arriving, I'll tell
you a little about my trip back from Sweden:
I left Goteborg on the 1st of July. I spent the night in a
youth hostel in Halsingborg, Sweden. There, I met a man who
was travelling with his wife by car. He offered to take me to
Lubeck, Germany.

634 07/10/1957 12:15 Belgium Bruxelles woh djh
The next morning we took the ferry from Halsingborg to
Helsingor, Denmark. In the afternoon we stopped just below
Copenhagen for lunch and a swim. We spent the night in Gedser,
at the souther tip of Denmark. At 5:00 the next morning we
took the ferry from Gedser to Grossenbrode in northern Germany.
At Lubeck I got a ride to Hamburg, and from there another to
Hanover, where I spent the night.
the next morning two men driving an 8-ton truck drove me to
Oberhausen, Germany. I hoped to be in Arnham, Holland; but
since it was already 8 p.m. I was getting worried. But a
doctor picked me up, and after talking with him awhile, he
invited me to spend the night with him and his wife. As has
been my custom when a driver invites me to drink or eat lunch
as his guest, I refused once (but just once!).
When I got to the house, I took a warm bath and had a delicious
dinner. Since it was the 4th of July, the doctor put a stack
of American records on the phonograph, brought out a case of
beer, and said we three could have our own little celebration.
since I was all but an invited guest, I couldn't refuse. What
a ball we had!. The next morning I went on to Amsterdam.
after spending a few hours there, I went to the Hague in the
afternoon. Since it was only the 5th and I couldn't be in
Brussels before the 8th, I spent 3 nights at the YH at the
Hague.

I spent 3 nights at the YH at the Hague. It was a beautiful
YH. Had acres of lawn, gardens, and woods. we were right on
the North Sea, so I did much swimming as well as sightseeing.
On the 8th I passed through Rotterdam and Antwerp and arrived
in Brussels. passing by the North Station I met the same boy
from Brussels who I had met on the boat. We had seen each
other on a bridge in Cologne, Germany - he in a train, I on
foot. He was just getting back from Copenhagen. "Isn't it a
small world!"
I'm having a ball here in Brussels. Last night Claudine,
Lucienne, Leo (Lu-Lu's boy friend) and I went dancing in a park
as we had done 2 years ago when Cl. arrived from the States.
So, although I miss you all so much, I'm having fun. Time is
passing so quickly.
When you write me, please put the date on the letter - it
helps. If there is any important mail for me, please send it
on, for I'll be leaving for Vienna in two weeks. Dad, how much
did I get in my last pay check? Enough, I hope. Love to you

Dear Mum, Dad, and Bill, thanks tons for the letters.
Yesterday I got note from Sis. She sounds like she is having a
great time. Apparently she'll do anything to keep Tommy with
her: she said he stepped on some glass and had to have 23
stitches. Because of that, he had to stay at the Cape for a
week!
I got your letter yesterday, Bill. You got yourself quite a
job. How do you do it? I'm glad to hear that things are going
well with Phyllis. In a few years, Mum better get out her
crying sheet: weddings will be coming one after the other. _In
principle_ Claudine and I are now engaged. She plans on coming
over to the States for good in two years. We shan't get
married till June of '60, at the earliest. At least Mum
doesn't have to worry about my doing anything before I finish
school. Of course, if I have to go into the service for a few
years, we might wait till I'm through with that. We'll cross
that bridge when we come to it.
I hope you all approve of Claudine. Since it is I who will be
marrying her I suppose it doesn't matter what you all think of

How did you hear that I made Dean's List? that was quite a
surprise to me. You'll be getting a letter soon telling how
much my scholarship will be next hear. Let's keep our fingers
crossed.
Now for news from the battle-front: As you can guess, I'm
still having the most wonderful time possible. The only snag
is Claudine's mother's disposition. When she's in a good mood
she's wonderful. When she's in a bad mood, though, she's
unbearable. Already I'm having trouble with the in-laws.
Here are my plans for the rest of the summer: Monday July 22
Claudine and I are going down to Namur to see a friend of hers.
We're then taking a boat ride down the Meuse River to Dinant.
It's supposed to be a very beautiful ride. I'll spend the
night at the YH in Dinant, then go on the next day to
Luxembourg. Passing through Germany and France, I'll arrive in
Salzburg, Austria, on July 27. On her way to Vienna by train,
Claudine is stopping at Salzburg for the same two days that
I'll be there.

On her way to Vienna by train, Claudine is stopping at Salzburg
for the same two days that I'll be there. On the 29th, we'll
both go on to Vienna - she by train, I by hitchhiking. At
Vienna Claudine will have classes at the university in the
morning and her afternoons and evenings will be free so that we
can have fun together. After three weeks I'll leave on August
26th for the AFS summer camp in southern Austria. Claudine and
I will both arrive there on the 17th. On the 26th I'll take a
train to Brussels, arriving the 27th. The 28th a train at 6:00
a.m. for Rotterdam, where I'll embark.
Since I don't yet know what my address in Vienna will be,
continue to send my letters here to Brussels. Mrs. Diwald will
forward them. After August 12th until the 21st you can send my
letters by airmail ($.15) by airmail to the following address:
AFS Summercamp, Weissensee-Patazipf, Post
Techendorf/Weissensee, Karnten, Austria. Be sure to include
the return address. That's all for now. Love and kisses, Dave
p.s. Bill, if you need an excuse to kiss Phyll, give her one
for me.

Hi, there. I've got a lot to tell you about, but not much
enthusiasm for writing. Here's what I've been doing lately.
Left Dinant 7/23. Slept in Luxembourg city, next night in
Strasbourg France. Then on to Munich. The trip from Strasbourg
to Munich was the most beautiful I have had. It was right
through the Black Forest. The road wound through valleys and
mile-high mountains. The only thing that burns me up is that it
has been raining almost constantly. Consequently I have had no
opportunities to take pictures. Oh, well, when I'm at the AFS
camp in Karnten, a trip has been planned to Grossglockner, the
highest mountain in Austria (over three miles). Then I'll get
a chance for good pictures.
I got to Munich a day earlier than I had planned. I went to
the central station. I knew that the train Claudine was taking
to Salzburg left Brussels at 9 the night of the 25th. when I
looked on the timetable I found that the same train stopped in
Munich at 6 a.m. on the 26th. So I got a ticket to Salzburg.
At 6 the next morning I got on the train. I found Claudine,
sleeping. Was she surprised when she found me sitting next to
her when she awoke, for she hadn't expected to see me before
Vienna.

We arrived at Salzburg 10 a.m. on the 26th. Left our things at
the YH, then visited the center. Saw Mozart's birthplace. At
night we had a delicious supper of soup (beef noodle), veal
cutlets, beets, potatoes, salad, mild, and chocolate pudding
with whipped cream, for only 60 cents apiece. And the
restaurant was very old and picturesque. That night we
listened to a performance of Mozart's "Don Giovane" in the
market place. It was quite interesting. Yesterday it rained
all day, so we didn't do much. Went to see the movie "Richard
III," in German. Ate at the same restaurant as the night
before.

Today we are leaving for Vienna. If you wish to write me there
before August 12, send the letter to Claudine at the address on
the back of this envelope. She will know the letters are for
me. If you put c/o's on the letter, it would be too confusing,
so don't put my name on the envelope. Claudine will know the
letters are for me. Copy the address _exactly_ as it is on the
reverse side. You will have to send the letters by air mail,
$.15. So far my money is going fine, so don't bother sending
me any. I'll let you know when I run out. I can't see that
that can possibly happen. I am sure the boat will arrive in
N.Y. September 7. That is, unless we run into bad weather.

Last night Claudine and I went just outside the city to
Schoenbrunn Palace, which used to be the summer palace of the
Austrian royal family. There, in the formal royal theatre, a
richly-decorated small room, we heard G. Rossini's opera
"L'Italiana in Algerie." It was very interesting, being the
first live opera I have ever heard. I guess I'll always prefer
musicals such as "The King and I," though.
Every morning, Claudine goes to her German class at the

also back to the same theatre as before for Hayden's operetta,
