The MIT Washington Office was established in August, 1991 as part of the MIT President's office. Working with faculty and members of the central administration, the office seeks to broaden and strengthen MIT's relationship with the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, with the Executive branch and with the Washington higher education and science and technology communities. Interns assist MIT staff in playing an active role in national policy debates of relevance to research universities.
Prospective intern candidates must have a strong interest in the federal government and the legislative process. Students selected for an internship position will gain exposure to the legislative process and become familiar with the vast array of public policy issues of concern to research-intensive universities.
Working with the Senior Legislative Assistants, the intern will be responsible for producing substantive legislative assignments that encompass the tracking of bills, congressional testimony, reports from congressional committee hearings, Executive branch directives, and recent agency actions. The intern will interact with Congressional offices, higher education associations, science societies, other university government relations representatives, and the federal agencies. Opportunities for individual initiative will be provided. Office tasks, while required, are kept to a minimum.
We typically offer one rising senior the opportunity to spend the summer with us. It is an unpaid internship; however, some students have been successful in securing UROP funding for this opportunity in the past.
Traditionally, candidates have been selected from referrals provided to the office from the MIT Washington DC Summer Internship Program, offered by the MIT Political Science Department. The application deadline for this excellent summer internship opportunity has been in late January, but check the please check the following website for an exact date and to obtain more information: http://web.mit.edu/summerwash/www/index.html
