Selections from the Collection

Cambridge, MA --January 2007 .   The Dean's Gallery presents Selections from the Collection a showing of thirteen prints from the List Visual Arts Center' s Student Loan Art Collection. The Student Loan Art Collection program, initiated in 1966, offers MIT undergraduate and graduate students, as well as student groups, the chance to borrow important artworks by leading contemporary artists for their living or work spaces for the academic year.

The Collection is a wonderful art resource for students, providing them with exposure to examples of work by regional and international artists. Most students have had little experience living with original works of art; this program helps start a relationship that might lead to making art, visiting museums and galleries, or collecting art. Annually in September approximately four hundred works from the Student Loan Art Collection are exhibited at the List Center for students and the public to view. Students are encouraged to borrow works at that time.

The works featured in Selections from the Collection represent a variety of different print techniques (including silkscreen, etching, and lithography) and subject matters (both representational and abstract). The artists range from the famous to the under recognized and include:   Eric Avery, Walter Darby Bannard, Varda Chryssa, Susan Crile, Robert Cumming, Aaron Fink, Edward Henderson, Don Nice, Edward Stasack, Pat Steir, Andy Warhol, and Jack Youngerman. Frequent visitors to The Dean's Gallery will recall that one artist on exhibition, Aaron Fink, was subject of a solo exhibition here one year ago.
