Gerald Shertzer: City Borne

When I was a young boy in Brooklyn, my father would often take me out in the car on a Sunday morning, and make this offer, " why don't you decide which way to go and we'll take a little trip "? I remember each turn brought us into a new neighborhood with different houses, apartment buildings, gates, fences; it was like going through room after room of a museum of the city. That excitement about architecture and spaces still remains the basis for much of my painting. Two decades ago when I began these paintings in the South End, I was still influenced by those early images and worked to incorporate them with the "New Boston", and my abiding interest in color. I'm also still interested in fences, backyards, oddly lit windows, the majesty of the city at night, and the incredible sight of the city appearing on the horizon, from an airplane. But, there is also a bit of danger, speed, traffic and the unexpected in my work, a little like the trips I took with my father.
