Mary Bucci McCoy:
New Landscapes

May 3, 1994 - June 3, 1994

Curated by Michelle Fiorenza

I am interested in creating images which move beyond a literal rendering of the landscape; the landscape is my point of departure. Rather than working outside, I photographi the landscape-woods and gardens-when walking or camping, and bring these images, along with objects I collect, back to my studio as source material.

By working with sequencing of images and with details of the landscape, I am exploring the way we experience the "natural" landscape as our vistas gradually narrow; as more and more, we experience the "natural" landscape in snippets defined by what we have built or destroyed. Do we piece togethere a cohesive whole from these parts? Whate do we see and feel when we look closely at a part of the landscape? In the works I am presenting I seek to deine a new landscape, one that is metaphorical as well as literal.
