Return to Berlin, New Hampshire
Black and white photographs by Mark Ostow

May 2, 1996 through June 19, 1996

Curated by Michelle Fiorenza

My name is Mark Ostow and I should probably tell you why I took these pictures. I sold my graphics business six years ago because I wanted to photograph people. Now I spend most of my time photographing, sometimes for MIT/Sloan, sometimes for advertising agencies, sometimes for the Boston Phoenix. I continually find it challenging. Every person, every situation, every time I ask someone to trust me ... it's like the first time I took a picture. I went to Berlin because my grandmother use to live there and a my uncle had a store there a long time ago. I didn't know anyone and I didn't really know what I wanted, but when I got there I was amazed at how open people were. This is a place where you can still talk to people, where every store isn't part of a chain. It's a place where people still matter. That's why I take pictures.
