Sheepeater Cliff
On the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Geyser Basin is Sheepeater Cliff, where you will find an excellent example of columnar jointing in basalt due to shrinkage during cooling. Following the fishing trail along the Gardner River you pass another section of the cliff and, after a slight climb, reach a meadow. Rhyolite composes loose boulders and the cliff across the way. Within the rhyolite are pieces of basalt that were formed when the basaltic lava was cooled rapidly within the cooler rhyolitic lava. |
