Recent Deshpande Center Spin-out, Taris Biomedical, Garners Attention from Local VC Firms - During the Spring 2006 grant cycle, the Desphande Center funded Professor Michael Cima, of MIT's Materials Science and Engineering department, and faculty director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, to develop his idea for a drug delivery device that would administer medication directly to the bladder over an extended time period. At the end of the one year grant period he had shown a successful proof of concept with an early prototype, and was awarded a renewal grant to develop a more advanced prototype and undertake testing in animals. These experiments provided compelling data on the likely efficacy of a device for human use. Prof. Cima, along with MIT colleague, Prof. Robert S. Langer, subsequently founded a new company, Taris Biomedical. Their start-up will commercialize the technology and develop clinical products and has successfully raised capital of $15 million by investors such as Flagship Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners and Polaris Venture Partners.
