Dear Readers,
Welcome to the first issue of our newsletter in 2008!
We continue to be very busy, and in calendar 2007 we awarded grants to 14 new projects and saw several projects spin out into start-up companies. We funded projects in biotechnology, diagnostics, energy, electronics, imaging, instruments, materials and medical devices. There never seems to be a shortage of creative ideas from MIT faculty and students.
We will be announcing our Spring 2008 grantees in March. Stay tuned…
Best Regards,
Leon Sandler
Executive Director
The Kauffman Foundation recently published the results of a study of "proof of concept centers". The centers studied were the MIT Deshpande Center and the Von Liebig Center at UCSD. They found that these centers have a huge impact on innovation and moving university research into the commercial market. A press release and full report are available.
