ADVANCED ALGORITHMS TO INCREASE WIRELESS NETWORK CAPACITY

Greg Wornell
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Next-generation wireless video services will constitute an exploding
market over the next few years. Current cellular and wireless LAN
infrastructures are insufficient, however, to support not only the
kinds of multimedia streaming traffic that video will require, but
also the increasing numbers of subscribers. Since the available resources—power
and bandwidth—are limited, the necessary increase in capacity
can only come from new, highly advanced algorithms.
This project will develop a novel transmission scheme employing very
smart multiple antennas. A core component of the scheme is a special
“interference canceling” precoder built on advanced algorithms
that approach the promised fundamental limits of current network capacity.
The nature of the precoder is general in scope and therefore will
likely find applications in a variety of information and communication
technologies.
