POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Deshpande Center Guidelines for Volunteers - participants in privileged activities with the Center must agree to abide by these guidelines.

MIT Policy on Conflict of Interest - the Deshpande Center must abide by Institute conflict of interest guidelines (e.g., cannot fund projects that involve a company in which a faculty member has a financial stake).

Intellectual Property - The Deshpande Center follows Institute policies regarding intellectual property.

Sponsored Research Staff Appointments - some non-faculty in the School of Engineering are accorded priciple investigator status and are eligible to apply for Deshpande Center grants.

Founders Study: MIT, the Impact of Innovation
"MIT: The Impact of Innovation," which was prepared by the BankBoston Economics Department, presents the results of a major new study on the national economic impact of companies founded by MIT alumni and alumnae. Among other findings, the study reveals that MIT graduates have founded 4,000 companies, creating 1.1 million jobs worldwide and generating annual sales of $232 billion.

Licensing of University Inventions Adds More than $20 Billion and 150,000 Jobs

A paper from 1995 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Licensing Office -- measuring the effects of licensing of university inventions on the economy -- is the first to document that university licensing stimulates investment and promotes jobs even before sales of licensed products.
