Here, for the first, time, is a completely unofficial guide to Government Grants available for viewing on the World Wide Web. This page was prepared in response to interest generated by the Grant assignment from Mr. Zach teaching AP Government at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. If you have found a source of grants that is not on this list and you feel it should be added, please mail me.

A good place to start is the Whitehouse web page, which serves as a clearinghouse of executive branch information through its Executive Branch page. From there, it is easy to get to any of the cabinet branches, many of which feature grant pages. The Grant Pages listed below are catagorized by their Department in the Federal Government.

• Department of Agriculture:
  Although I could not find any direct information on Federal Grants in the Department of Agriculture Web Site, there are many branches to its various departments and bureaus that might be worth checking out.
  
  
• Department of Commerce:
  A search of the Department of Commerce web site revealed that most mentions to "Grants" were in reference to the Granting of Patents, not in the transfer of money from the Federal government to the State. However, as with Agriculture, there are many subareas to the DoC that might have information on federal grants.
  
  
• TARGET="_top"Department of Defense:
  A search for Grants revealed a document that included "Both government and contractor organizations must submit a completed DD Form 1540 Registration for Scientific and Technical Information Services. Contractor organizations must complete a separate DD Form 1540 for each contract or grant." I doubt that much grant information is available in this area.
  
  
• Department of Education:
  Lots of information available here, including information on the much-balleyhooed Goals 2000 program. A keyword search on "Grant" revealed 40 documents, including one called Recent Grants and Contracts. Very navitagable site. The DoEd also publishes full books on their grant programs that are available for viewing online.
  
  
• Department of Energy:
  Although there's probably a lot of grant information here, it'll take some looking and seeking to find it. There is no way to search the site, only a list of Headquarters and Program Service Offices that contains links to the various departments, each with their own services.
  
  
• Department of Health and Human Services
  The main page of HHS contains a folder called GrantsNet. Sounds like an easy way to find information. According to the starting page "This new service, GrantsNet, is a new public-access computer network for finding and exchanging information about HHS and other Federal grant programs." Very informative.
  • National Institutes of Health
    NIH has its own grant page where I initially found my grant for use. This site is also very user-friendly, more than any of the others that I have looked at. The NIH site provides the dollar amount, purpose, and catagories of a grant through an easy to use search form administered by CRISP (Computer Retrieval of Information on Scientific Projects) sponsored by the Public Health Service. A quick search here reveals over 100 government grants to MIT and the information on each grant is very compact yet informative, providing answers to nearly all of the substantive questions of the assignment.
    
    
• Department of Housing and Urban Development
  Grants are defined as "Funding Opportunities" in HUDspeak. But this option is clearly available on the home page of HUD's site. Looking at the section, however, reveals that "Presently, HUD has no open funding competitions." This site seems pretty dry for grant information.
  
  
• Department of the Interior
  I could not find any grant information on this site, although there are many branches that might have information that are accessable from this site.
  
  
• Department of Justice:
  I could not find any grant information on this site, although there are many branches that might have information that are accessable from this site.
  
  
• Department of Labor:
  The closest things to Grants in the keyword section are "Glass Ceilings" and the "Generalized System of Preferences". As always, there are many branches that might have information that are accessable from this site.
  
  
• Department of State:
  DoS is a little behind on getting up on the Internet, and doesn't even have a server of their own yet. Henceforth, I couldn't find a listing of branches or a listing of grants. Stay clear of this one.
  
  
• Department of Transportation
  I could not find any grant information on this site, although there are many branches that might have information that are accessable from this site.
  
  
• Department of the Treasury
  Although there's a "Shortcut to Tax Forms", there is no mention of Grants on the DoT's home page. However, there are many branches that might have information that are accessable from this site.
  
  
• Department of Veteran's Affairs
  This home page seems more towards giving information about benefits to Veterans, and not mentioning the Grants that the DoV gives out. But, a quick peek brings out a search form that lets one search for their favorite research and development (aka grant) project. This site appears to be full-featured in its grant information. A quick search, for example, brings up about 35 or 40 government grants to MIT for research. The grants do not show the dollar amount, however.
  
  

• Lycos:
  (Hunting WWW Information)
  A search here produced over 19000 documents relating to grants, including some related to federal government grants in Australia.
  
  

InfoSeek Net Search InfoSeek Net Search is the most powerful and popular way to search the Web. Just type your question in plain English or enter words and phrases. Helpful Tips

• Yahoo: (A Guide to WWW)
  A search here produced 151 entries related to grants, including entries such as grants provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Of course, you'll also have to wade through pages about US Grant and every other Grant that ever lived.
