Wizardry in Chemical Education

The traditional chemistry demonstration is often used to excite and inform a broad audience to the science fields. The classical visuals and explanations can be improved, however, to leave a message and a deeper impression on its audience.

These performances at the Illinois Renaissance Faire included a storyline and acting along with demonstrations, audience participation, and hands-on instruction. The performer emphasizes the notion that anyone can be a "wizard" with proper training. Standard explanations were not given; instead, the mystery of the phenomena was underscored. Questions were raised to provoke the audience's curiosity and to suggest that the “magic” can be elucidated through deeper study.
