Welcome
Welcome to my world on the web, a window through which I would like to share with you my dream and my life.
As a young student, I am in pursuit of a bright future with my efforts. All your support and encouragement are invaluable sources of my courage in carving my way towards the goal.
Finally, it would be my great pleasure to see that you could find here something that helps. If you have ideas, suggestions and anything to share with me, please don't hestitate to write to:

My brief history
In Foshan, Guandong, China, 1981, ......
a smart boy came to this world. His parents gave the name
Dahua to this crying baby,
with the best wish that he could fly as high as he can in future. The story begins ......
Middle school
Foshan No.1 Middle School, the place that my dream originated from
I spent my childhood and adolescence in Foshan, a city which has been one of the four most famous towns in ancient China, and now is the third largest city in Guangdong province.
In year 1994, I entered
Foshan No.1 middle school.
The six-year's study in this school shaped my attitudes towards the world and life, as well as my style of learning and thinking. As the best school in Foshan city, it always encourages its students with a famous slogan that I still clearly remember
Today, I take pride in No.1 Middle school with the goal that it will be proud of me tomorrow.
Bearing the words in mind, I studied new knowledges with eager and kept being among the top students in my class.
In 1997, Mr. Guanghui She became my physics teacher, and I devoted myself to physics contest under his direction in the following two years. With his guidance, I studied Calculus and Advanced Physics by myself. Along with the increasing of knowledges, my ability in analyzing, modeling, and solving problems were simultanelously improved. The experience in this period dramatically changed my life orbit and finally raised me to a height that I had never imagined before. In the physics contest held in 1999, I won the No.1 place in the whole Guangdong province, and consequently selected to participate the National-wide final competition representing the province.
The achievements in physics competition earned me the entry to the University of Science and Technology (USTC), with the exemption of taking the college entrace examination.
Undergraduate
The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), which led me to the academic realm
In year 2000, the arrival of the new century annouced a new era of the world, also a new stage of my life. With curiosity and hope, I stepped into the campus of
University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)
- a famous university in China gathering talented youth. Since then, I have been tied to the academic world of computer science.
Surrounded by the guys that were as excellent, I found that it is much more difficult to become outstanding than before. Despite all the challenges that I had met, the successful stories of the alumni and the goal to stand among them kept me advancing. The painstaking efforts resulted in considerable progress, which eventually restored my confidence and established me as one of the best students in the department.
In the third year, I participated in an exchange program between USTC and
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
for a semester, where I took the computer vision course taught by
Prof. Long Quan.
He is an accomplished expert in 3D reconstruction and stereo geometry. The course led me to the fascinating field of computer vision.
When I returned to USTC, I began research on the tracking of people with a multi-camera surveillance system in
Information Processing Center (IPC) under the direction of
Dr. Houqiang Li.
In a university-wide competition, my project was given an "excellent" rating. This research project gave me important experience applying my academic knowledge to resolve practical problems.
My academic performance and research experience earned me an internship at
Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA)
in my last semester in USTC. At MSRA I worked on a project aiming to synthesize facial expressions by transforming expressions from one person to another, under the supervision of
Dr. Yingqing Xu.
It was tremendously rewarding to work with prominent international researchers in this world-class institute. We shared our ideas, debated on controversial issues, and collaborated to drive the state-of-the-art forward. Here, I realized that the most important value of research lies in innovation, as my mentor told me,
In academic research, you must always be the first in your field.
The four years in USTC is unforgettable, not only because of its free academic atmosphere that had deeply influenced me, but also the good friends that I met there. Some of my university classmates including Qingqing, Nannan, and Changhu are still among my best friends today. The days that we were together were filled with joy and excitement and left me wonderful memory. The friendship with them is the most precious treasure that I obtained in my undergraduate years.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the ladder to my goal
After graduating from USTC, I began a master's degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and continued my research in face recognition under the supervision of
Prof. Xiaoou Tang. I did not know where I should start researching in such a broad field, so I spent months reading through hundreds of papers in related fields and implementing a series of representative algorithms. My efforts led me to the general finding that a limitation of much mainstream research is its narrow focus on only one aspect of a problem. Taking into account other facets of a problem often leads to insights and thus solutions.
By continuously discovering and resolving problems, I have been striding forward on my academic road. I am very proud of how well my works have been acknowledged by the academic community. In the past two years, I have published a series of papers at international conferences, including seven at the most prestigious conferences such as
CVPR,
ICCV, and
ECCV. Owing to these achievements, I have been able to present my works to top researchers from all over the world. In addition, my advisor, Professor Tang, designated me to lead a team for implementing my research in practical systems. Leading this team gave me valuable engineering experience. It also taught me important management skills, as I learned to utilize the expertise of my team members.
Ph.D
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a new start
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
is the world's best university in engineering, whose prestige originates from its immense contributions to the field of computer science, where many distinguished professors are dedicated to the cutting edge researches in a number of fields.
Its creative research environment, plenty of academic resources, and high standard courses make it a dream of gifted students all over the world.
From this September, I will become a student in MIT - my dream school. I believe that it will be an exciting experience studying and working in such a top univerisity, together with the top faculty and top students therein.
History has passed, future is insight. Whatever happens, I would never slow down my stride.
