New dialup features

MindTerm SSH
Secure logins to the dialups are now available via the MindTerm SSH Java applet. To use it, you'll need to point a Java-capable web browser at http://athena.dialup.mit.edu.

Connecting Securely

Using insecure telnet and ftp to log into the Athena dialup servers is one of the primary causes of passwords being stolen and accounts broken into on MITnet. Information Systems makes available a wide variety of software to allow users to log into the dialups securely; you can download most of these software packages from http://web.mit.edu/software. Note that this software is access controlled and requires an MIT Certificate to download.

If you're using SSH to connect to the dialups, you may want to verify the dialup SSH public key .

For Windows-based PCs

Secure CRT
An SSH (Secure Shell) client site-licensed to MIT. To use it, you will also need to download the license key

Host Explorer
A Kerberized Telnet client.

Plop
NOTE: This application is not yet out of testing. This is a Kerberized FTP client with a very specific purpose: it will allow you to securely upload files from your Windows PC to the "www" directory of an Athena locker.
For Macintosh computers
- Nifty Telnet SSH
- Better Telnet
  A Kerberized Telnet client.
- Fetch
  An MIT-modified version of the popular Fetch FTP client which uses Kerberos to secure file transfers.
For all platforms
- MindTerm SSH
  A Java applet served from the Athena dialup servers which allows for SSH logins by pointing a Java capable browser at http://athena.dialup.mit.edu. Netscape 4.06 or higher is recommended for the best results.
