Calls for 3-5 page white papers are directed to all members of the MIT faculty. A white paper may include authors from DuPont and may be initiated by DuPont investigators, but in every case a faculty principal investigator is the central figure in the collaborative effort. The purpose of the white paper is to provide sufficient technical and budgetary detail to facilitate a preliminary review by the MIT Internal Advisory Committee (IAC), while maintaining a low barrier to entry into the competitive process. White papers are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year, although white paper calls for targeted areas of research may have specified deadlines.

Authors of successful white papers are asked to prepare formal proposals and budgets. These documents are reviewed by the IAC at MIT and by the DuPont Advisory Board. Based on these reviews, a subset of the proposals is forwarded to the DMA Steering Committee where the final decision is taken regarding funding of the proposed programs. Successful proposals may be launched as stand-alone new projects or incorporated into the framework of existing programs within the DMA portfolio.
