Message:: I am writing a bibliography on the life of Genl Benjamin Johannes Viljoen, a general on the Boer side during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. He emigrated to the United States in 1904 and passed away in Las Cruces, NM, in 1917. He is known to have been a prominent Mason who joined a lodge in the South African Republic around 1894, pesumably in Krugersdorp, Transvaal, South Africa. Message:: I have unearthed an unusual square and compasses in the process of my research of Masons in Orange, Alamance and Guilford counties, NC. This one seems to bear, rather than the "G" or other letters to which I am accustomed, an Arm & Hammer. (Yes, it looks rather a lot like the one on the box of baking soda.) I cannot find anyone who can identify it. My uncle is a 32 degree Mason and has never seen it before. (Or if he cannot tell me, has declined to answer in that manner. If it is a Masonic secret, I can accept that, but want to know.) Any ideas? Anyone?

Message:: I am a returned missionary of the LDS ("mormon") church. While serving my two-year mission in Tampico, mexico, I was fascinated by the opportunity to speak with masons, and learn from eachother as our intelligence increased. I was even invited by a Mr. Luis Gonzales(grade 13 mason) to be initiated in the grand lodge of Tampico, Tamaulipas Mexico. The more I learned about masonry, while the said Brother did not divulge direct answers to many of my questions, my understanding of life and purpose increased dramatically. He taught me to discover answers myself, using concepts he knew and was familiar to due to his involvement with masonry. I found one thing: truth is eternal, and G-D has his allegorical way of revealing so as the defamers may not discover eternal truths. Satan also has a flip-side to every pure and truthful principal. I respect masons for there zeal to discover and practice truths which are not results of mankind, but rather principals of such, mostly misundetrtood by a world declining in its moral obligations. !
I myself could not become a mason while serving my LDS mission due to time and dificulty of meeting such high obligations at the same time. Now that I have more time dedicated to my personal progress, I would like to become a brother in freemasonry- for- there is no greater religion than the truth.... whoever reads this, please respond quickly, I am patiently awaiting the opportunity to share with so many others the peace and joy which comes from knowing truth, and practicing it.

Message:: Thank you for this informative site. I am looking for the words to a song I heard on an old field recording from the mountains of my native Virginia, which I take to be a Masonic song. It is called "The Bright and Morning Star". Unfortunately the words on the record are not clear, and the singers had trouble remembering them. The author of the liner notes on the record was not even aware of the song's Masonic character. As best I can figure out, the first verse goes,
Come all ye Knights, ye Knights of Molay
And learn to do as I have done.
You might have been [unclear] brighter
When in the New Jerusalem.
The chorus goes,
We are the true-born sons of Levi.
We are the true-born sons of God.
We are the root and the branch of David,
The bright and glorious Morning Star.
It goes on to sing about the Ark of the Covenant and the crossing of the Jordan. If anybody can provide me with the correct words, I will be most grateful.

Message:: My father, William Lawrence Martin, was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Bedford, Quebec, Canada from 1948 until his death in 1957. Recently I came across some old pictures of my mother's and one has intrigued me very much. Although my father was buried at the Pigeon Hill Cemetery in the Province of Quebec, she has a photo of a graveyard plaque that simply says: "Bill's plaque, Masonic Cemetery, Utica, New York." Any information you can give me concerning this will be much appreciated. Is it normal for Canadian Masons to have plaques in other Masonic cemeteries? Where is this cemetery in Utica, N.Y. located exactly? Thanks for any help you can give me. I contacted the Grand Lodge of Montreal but they did not seem to have any information. My father was born in the U.S.A. and I wonder if this could have something to do with it.

Message:: I am studying Freemasonry and have a Difficult question to ask anyone who can help. I have been told by someone who was raised in a Masonic family that there are sexual rites. In fact this person was sexually abused by a Mason and feels it was in a ritual Masonic context. Would appreciate comment on this.
[Webmaster's Reply: This is nonsense. There is absolutely NOTHING sexual or remotely like anything sexual in any Masonic ceremony.
If this person was abused in his own family, that is because of some sick or twisted person in the family.
I would be curious to know why this abused person "feels" that their abuse had anything at all to do with Masonry.

Message:: Next to my family and my church my Masonic Membership is my greatest and most loved possession. I am a member of Vaux Lodge #406 since November 1958. I have taken a Dual Membership this year in Boyertown Lodge #741. I am a member of the four bodies in the Valley of Reading in the Scottish Rite. I also hold membership in the Royal Arch Chapter #271 and the Nativity Commandery in the York Rite and located in Pottstown. I am a member of Rajah Temple A.A.N.O.M.S. since June 1972 and I have been Chaplain of that Shrine Temple for twenty seven of my years of membership, including the current Shrine Year. We have a lot of critics today but they are criticizing something they are in no position to be judging. There is ample material in any good library that will tells any interested reader something of the great history and the rich heritage we share as Freemasons. Freemasonry thrives where men are free. Dictators have always hated and oppressed Freemasons. You can judge any organization by its enemies as well as its friends. I would not trade my membership in Masonry and the brothers I have and the good fellowship I have enjoyed for anything in the world. There is no other organization under God's sun , except the Church of Jesus Christ, in whose ranks I have served as an ordained minister for 44 years. June 10 of this year is the 44th Anniversary of my Ordination,that gives so much and does so much for others, for non-members, as do the Freemasons in the USA. Message:: Greetings. I am not a Mason, but have spoken to a group of Masons at the Festival of St. John the Baptist(?) twice. I am weighing the facts in deciding whether or not to petition the lodge where I spoke for membership. My hindrances are: 1) It seems that Masonry claims to teach truths about God which are not contained in the Christian Bible, but I believe God revealed to us all we need to know (2 Timothy 3:16.17); and 2) It seems that Masonry teaches that all religions worship the same God, but I believe we can only know God through Jesus Christ. Do my beliefs really contradict the teachings of Masonry? I know some godly men who are Masons, but I am reluctant to ask them, knowing they are pledged not to give certain information. I do not want to miss an opportunity to grow and help others if I am misunderstanding the tenent of Freemasonry, but neither will I do anything which contradicts with my faith, which I believe is my primary obligation. Any help?? Thank you.
