Glittering Star Lodge #322, as explained below, was instrumental in the foundation of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, fore-runner of today's Grand Lodge of Massachusetts AF&AM. My thanks to Bro. Ron Gee for this extensive information. -- GLD

I had seen this information on your web page earlier and notified my Bro Secretary just prior to the Annual visit of Glittering Star to MW G L of Ireland last month. Sincere condolences from all members of G/Star. I am sure that R.W.Bro. Robert Patey will be sadly missed and not only for his work in Lodge.

Now, as to your interest. There is a book detailing the History of the Lodge but I shall have to search for it. It is a home produced publication but not by me I hasten to add.

The information I intended to send to your G. Sec was initiated because I saw the History of MW GL of Massachusetts on your web page and thought that I would bring you up to date. However here is a summary - more to follow if interested.

As you already know,at the foundation of the Prov.G.L. of Massachusetts, MW Bro Joseph Warren was made Prov Grand Master and he was assisted in the formation of PGL by the three military Lodges stationed in Boston at that time. One Ancient, one Scottish and on Irish. I believe that the first two mentioned are now defunct but I am delighted to be able to inform you that the Irish Lodge was Glittering Star #322 and it is still alive and very well.

MW Bro. Joseph Warren appointed as Prov G S W a certain Captain Jerimiah French and as Prov G J W, Captain Ponsonby Molesworth. Both of these Army Officers were members of Lodge Glittering Star. Glittering Star was warrented on May 3rd, 1759, 10 years before the foundation of the Prov GL of Massachusetts, in His Majesty's 29th Foot regiment.

Your MW Grand Lodge remembered the part played by Glittering Star in the formation of Prov GL of Massachusetts when at G/Star's 200th Installation in 1959, the MW Grand Lodge presented us with a solid silver 24 inch gauge which is used at every meeting of the Lodge and is always much admired.

I believe that there are only two travelling warrants still in existence, ours and St. Patricks #259, also Irish Constitution which is at present in Germany with its Regiment.

We have a base in Dudley, West Midlands (not far from Birmingham) where we usually have our Installation meeting which is attended by many distinguished brethren from various Constitutions. We usually have the pleasure of the company of either the Grand Master or his Deputy from the MW GL of Ireland. As far as Ireland is concerned we are regarded as a Lodge on Foreign soil!!.

I am at present Senior Warden and (DV) hope to attain the Chair next March.

We are not allowed to meet at our base because we have to excercise our travelling warrant and so we tend to be like cuckoos and meet all over the UK at the invitation of other Lodges.

Junior Warden, Grand Officers, Officers, Brethren and myself, Senior Warden, on the occasion of the re-enactment of the cornerstone laying ceremony of Massachusetts State House July 4th, 1995 - originally laid by Paul Revere in 1795. May MW Grand Lodge of Massachusetts continue to prosper.
