Dear Gary,

In answer to your question about our valley. It comprises of Comox, Courtenay and Cumberland population approx. 35,000. We are on the East side of the Island mid point. Sometimes referred to as Hawaii North as our climate is quite moderate, much similar to Seattle, Washington and Vancouver B.C., although more moderate than either of them. We may have a snow fall once a year lasting for maybe 5 to 10 days at the most. For us to get to the mainland is 1 1/2 hours by ferry although this is only a distance of say 35 miles. Our ferries are quite large and carry about 150 cars and for the most part quite a comfortable ride although it can get rough at times.

Our Lodges membership are Comox about 125, Courtenay 145 and Cumberland maybe 50 or 60 but like all lodges suffer from a lack of younger men and of course attendance.

The IPM sits right next the WM on his left and tries to keep him from any embarrassment as far as forgetting where he is in the meeting. Really the easiest job in the lodge to my way of thinking only having something to do maybe the first two or three meetings of the new Masters year. Our Director of Ceremonies is in charge of all ritual.

A mountain range runs right down the centre of our island and although not quite as high is very similar to the Rocky Mountains. Takes three hours to drive from one side of the island to the other and a long eight hour drive to go from end to end. The road for the most part is free way. We like to tell our visitors that if you're on the West side of the Island, if you could see across the Pacific you would see Japan.
