I don't know what it is going to take to resolve this. I have read a printed article by Cardinal Ratzinger, the head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Propegation of the Faith stating that "Catholics should avoid joining the Masons on danger of committing a serious sin." Archbishop STafford of Denver and the Archdiocessan newspaper have repeatedly confirmed this. Also a major Catholic NAtional Newpaper "Catholic Twin Circle" published a very large article (multiple pages) covering the evil paganism of Freemasonry. I, too, know of a few catholic clergy in our Craft, but they are very careful to keep their membership a secret from the Church. (I guess I am the anomaly - I am on a major Archdiocessan Committee for the Archdiocese of Denver, but always wear pins, belt buckles, etc.. and always reply to attacking articles - I have been rebuked but haven't been excommunicated as of yet!). I too read many opinion articles and analysies in the Craft and its publications stating that the Church had now accepted Freemasonry, including the fact that the Pope had invited the Grand Lodge of Illinois' Officers to an official function a few years back. But after doing a lot of research on my own and having a few other friends do similar research, it is adamantly clear that the ban is still in place.
Brother Mike, ask your Jesuit brothers if they could inform Cardinal O'Connor or the Church Hierarchy without being reprimanded. I'll bet they say no. I hope that this changes.

The ban started to come un-glued in October 1965 with the publication of "Nostra Aetate" by Paul VI. Then in July 1974 the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith took formal action to pull the teeth from Canon 2335 (the one specifically forbidding membership in Masonic bodies, among others). Finally, in 1983 Canon 2335 was replaced by a new Canon 1374 which condemns only "association(s) which plot(s) against the Church."
