Message:: Why may Masons become Eastern Stars, yet, Eastern Stars may not become Masons? Why are blacks not allowed in white Masonic lodges? What is it exactly that Masons do? You never hear of them being involved in community events or helping the needy. Please explain this to me on your page. I have two brothers and a nephew who are Masons, and they are very dedicated - but to WHAT? [Web-master's note: My mother lodge initiated two black members this past Wednesday night. All of America, not just Masonry, is recovering from more than 120 years of post-Emancipation legal and social apartheid, and if Masonry is not leading the pace, it is not falling behind either. So-called "white lodges" are becoming integrated in nearly every state of the union, except perhaps in some impervious parts of the Old Confederacy, and even there things are changing with time.

Mainstream Masons are allowed in the Eastern Star because the organization was established to be co-ed by its founders. Women are perfectly free to join two branches of Masonry: women's-only and mixed (co-ed). There are options for everyone. My friend's wife is a steward in her Masonic lodge (Masonic, not OES) and he and I cannot attend her meetings. Cose fan tutti!

Regarding community service: perhaps Masons do more than they brag about. Masons in the US give 2 million dollars each day to charity. Masons are the primary supporters of the Shriners Hospitals (all Shriners are Masons) -- those hospitals treat severly burned or crippled children from around the world in a network of US hospitals, and the patient and their families have never ever been charged a single penny for the surgery, medication, other treatments, follow-up, counselling, and community service that helps their recovery! Masons also support a Schizophrenia research foundation, a new literacy program for children with dyslexia and related syndromes, and several other medical charities. Masons are the majority of blood donors in nearly every state in the country. The Scottish Rite Masons endowed, created, and support the National Heritage Museum of the US in Lexington, Mass. Masons are the primary volunteers and financial support for a lost-child prevention program called CHIP. And in my town of Malden, Mass, the Masons run a Supplied Medical Device program that loans wheelchairs, crutches, invalid home-care supplies, walkers, and more to anyone in the local area who comes in to borrow them, absolutely free of charge. And that list is just off the top of my head. You might want to ask around -- you'll be surprised at what the Masons are doing to support your community.

Message:: I've been interested enough to wear a "G" tie-tack, every now and again. The number 3, 33, or 333 pops up a lot and I notice. And my closest friend who is a Stone Mason deeply believes his father has an apron. We've talked a little, very little, and I feel he has a way in, and I don't. My father died back in '96, have absolutely no relatives in the Freemasons, and the only "real friend I have, who's name is "Dan", doesn't really want me to join, I think. I haven't really been an upstanding citizen anyway, never hurt anyone, but have hurt myself an awful lot. I just want good friends and good people to spend time with, because I am not having any luck finding a wife anyway. Message:: There's one question that I would like to get answered, that I didn't ask, but probably already know the answer too. If someone has turned their life around and has started doing the right things in life, are actually trying to be a success, and down the road a few years wanting to pay their fellows back in the way of helping others and being respectful citizens. Can they maybe join if they may have had an etchy criminal background which is full of offenses that are substantial? Dejection through life is not where I want to be, but enlightened to a higher degree, with a little help of course. I have been on the right track for years, with a short relapse, and feeling better than ever. Maybe wanting to be more than I can be right now, but let it be known, I am ready for serious influence. I know I still have work to do, and will be working very hard to stay right with God and keep on the right path. Not jumping to conclusions but I am going to work at it li! ke someone is watching over my shoulder the whole time. Incessantly reminding myself that I'm working hard everyday of the rest of my life not for myself, but for others. It is on my mind constantly and there is no dought that I am doing the right things in my life for all the right reasons and to triumph over all of the wrong. I wonder if any of the lodges in Chicago, IL offer the same service. My son-in-laws family is in dire need of some medical equipment and was hoping I could be of some help in the situation.
