RQFC-topic: biographical data on P.J. Latham (P. Julian) Latham
Message:: Latham was a Master Mason (inducted 6-19-1900)of this Lodge, still alive in 1938 for an observance of his masonic birthday. Baysinger being then Master of Lodge 91. Latham was a senior engineer in the US Coast Guard, then about to retire after 40 years service, probably then about age 65. Are obituary and burial records available through or from the Lodge? Was an obituary published? I know Latham was alive at the end of 1944 but have no information on him after that date. I would be grateful for any biographical data on Latham, including survivors, last place of residence, birth and death dates, marriage(s), etc. Thank you.

RQFC-topic: History and use of Masonry in Kipling's THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING
Message:: My paper is due Friday 04/27/2001. Any information on the history and use of masonry in Rudyard Kipling's THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING. Thank you for your help.
[Web-master's note: Asking other people to do your homework, and
then leaving such a tight deadline, too? It's not a very long piece,
much closer to a short story than a novel in length. If you read it,
you'll find Freemasonry mentioned explicitly throughout. And don't try
to get by on renting the movie. It's a really good movie, but it's
different enough from the book that your teacher could catch you. So
read the story and look for these themes: How could one Mason recognize
another? How are Masons supposed to treat each other? When did Masonry
start, and how old does Masonry seem to be, according to the story?
(You can look up an encyclopedia article about Masonry, or the FAQ at
this web-site and see if Kipling was being accurate or exaggerating.)
What historical figure(s) does Kipling say were Masons? In Kipling's
story, men from what social class(es) became Masons? You can find all
that in the story. Good luck and get busy!]

RQFC-topic: Masonic "Orphan Train"?
RQFC Details: I was told that the Masons took my grandfather and his
family "under their wing" because my great grandfather was a Mason and
placed them on an orphan train to Illinois when their parents died. I
am trying to find out if the Masons did this in the 1890's and if so
what records exist that could be looked at so that I can verify some
information. Anyone who knows something about this topic, could you
please respond to me because I am trying to research my family for my
father who is 74 years old. Did the masons provide this type of service,
and if so how was it documented. All of this supposedly took place in
New York City where they lived at 195 Mulberry Street in tenement
housing. The family name was Bellotti/Billotti/Billotte and the father
was named Giusseppi, the wife named Caterina. Thank you so much for any
help you can give me in locating my family roots.
