Message:: I am researching Masonic themes in Edgar Allan Poe's short
story "Cask of Amontillado" and several questions regarding a family
motto therein "Nemo Me Impune Lacessit" which I believe was also the
Scottish national motto. I sek also to better understand the religious
friction (if any) between the Catholic church and Freemason movement
during the early to middle 1800s both in America and Europe. Any
assistance or direction you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Were(are)the Freemasons anti-papal? Was Giuseppe Garibaldi a Freemason?
Does the Proper name "fortunato" figure prominently in Masonic lore?
Again, thanks in advance for any support in my research.

RQFC-topic: What is Masonry for Those Who Know Nothing About Us
RQFC Details: I'm doing a 30 minute talk for one of my Church's Wednesday night dinner. The object is is to tell basic facts about our history which I already have. What I don't have and would like to include are things like: the total number of Masons in the U.S. and World wide, countries where masonry is legitmately practiced w/ number of MM in each, famous Masons, number of Masons who signed Declaration of Indepenence/Constitution/Presidents, etc. Objective is to make lay people aware of our historical background, significance, morality and contributions to society past and present. E.g., we're not just some secret club or another Elks or Moose. Any help in finding source data will be greatly appreciated.

Message:: Web-Master (and To Whom It May Concern),
I am looking for information regarding the conjunction between your
endeavor and that of the MIT Media Laboratory (which I'm sure is a
stone's throw from where you likely are reading this), if such a thing
may exist. I'm also searching for a way to become a Mason of the
Scottish Rite. The Phoenix Lodge is in my hometown of Hanover, MA, and I
know when the meetings are (as the sign on Rt. 53 displays); would it be
improper to try to catch somebody I might know from around town on their
way in? Any advice in an email would be extremely appreciated.
RQFC-topic: Freemasonry and It's Political, Societal, and Universal
RQFC Details: I would be curious as to know to what extent freemasons
hold political office in the United States Senate, House of
Representatives, and, accordingly, President of the United States. Any
links to scholarly writing on the topic would be of great import.

RQFC-topic: On Rudyard Kipling, English author and Mason
RQFC Details: Kipling indicates in one of his stories, "A Madonna of the
Trenches," that in a Lodge of Instruction (London), the Senior Warden
and another man (the narrator of the story) are getting reading for a
lodge meeting by "robing." Later in the story, a robe is taken from a
closet in the lodge and thrown over a sleeping brother. I thought Masons
did not wear robes. The time of this story is about 1920. Would they
have worn robes then?
