    RQFC-topic: Freemasonry and Politics
RQFC Details: I would like to start by saying that I apologize if any of these questions are intrusive. I respect your attempt to uphold the privacy of your society and hope that you will feel free to refuse to answer any questions that may intrude upon that. My first question is concerning membership. I notice on your website in many of the essays that it says members join by their free-will, what I am wondering is whether or not their are welcome to leave by the same free-will or if becoming a member means they are commited for life? My next question pretains to relationship between lodges. In my research I have noted that there seems to be some inconsistency (in symbols, rules, etc..) between different states, provinces, countries, etc... I am just wondering if there is a set code of masonry or if the different lodges are not particularily associated with each other. My final question is concerning the masonic oath, while I respect that because I am unlikely to understand! what it means anyhow, you would rather not tell me, I am just wondering if certain elite members of freemasonry would be obligated to follow that oath above and beyond political responsibilities and oaths and if there are any places where they might conflict. I thank you for any information you can provide me with and I found your site extremely helpful.

RQFC Details: I recently was in conversation with one of the elder masons of our lodge and he presented a picture to me of the Mason's horseshoe. But along with the Mason's symbol it contained an eagle on top as well as two hands shaking and a star and moon. I was asked if I could find out the significance of the eagle. I do have a picture of this and would be willing to forward a copy if you require.

Message:: I am the eldest grand child of James Edward Cowan(some people mispell his name as Cowans or Cowns) James Edward Cowan has a Masonic Temple dedicated to him in Portsmouth Virgina. He established the Ancient,Free and Accepted Scottish Rites Masons of the Central District for African-Americans in the State of North Carolina by securing a Charter from the Grand Lodge in England in the 1930s and won a court order in North Carolina (I think) after a court challenge by the rival Prince Hall Masons. I am seeking info for the Cowan Family regarding his legacy. J. E. Cowan's children have little info regarding his masonic activities. His grand children and great grand children are seeking info on his Scottish Rites Masons organizing activities in North & South Carolinas, Virginia, and Ohio for Black History purposes.

    RQFC-topic: Family History of W.Bro. H.A. Minchin
RQFC Details: Fraternal Salutations from the brethren of Lodge Minchin # 2710 EC. We meet at a southern most city of India, Trivandrum, on first Saturday of every month, twelve months a year. Lodge Minchin was established in 1897 and our founder Master was W. Bro. Humphry Alexander Minchin. W. Bro. Minchin was a British engineer in the service of the then Presidency (Colonial)Government of Madras and later deputed as Irrigation engineer to the government of the princely state of Travancore around 1895 or so. He was a past Master of Lodge Pandyan in another South Indian city of Madurai, within the Madras Presidency and now in the state of Tamilnadu. He had been the Sanitary Engineer of the city of Madurai when he joined Lodge Pandyan. He died in 1913 and was buried at the site of the Pechiparai irrigation dam which he supervised as engineer in charge of its construction. The dam still survives in tact and has not needed any major modifications. This is all that we kn! ow about W. Bro. Minchin. W. Bro. H.A. Minchin must have been a very enthusistic Mason. His father W. Bro. J.W. Minchin visited the Lodge in 1899 as the representative of the Grand Master, when the son was still WM. The founding brethren thought it fit to give the Lodge his or his family's name. We are certain that our founder Master should have had an illustrious masonic heritage to be thus honoured in hiw own lifetime and on founding itself. For quite sometime now I had been searching the net and other sources for some information on this masonic family and to locate any of the surviving members. Two lodges of English heritage with Minchin brethren as past masters came to my notice : Lodge Perfection # 9 and Lodge Phoenix # 257 EC. W. Bro. C.H. Minchin was the Master of Perfection in 1944 and 1945. Lodge Phoenix had a Past Master by name Minchin during 1800s. Possibly, I wish, the four gentlemen have some connection and some of their relatives still available to trace ! their history. It is also possible that some of them would be ! wondering what happened to the father and son after they went to India in those days of scant communication facilities. My messages to Lodge Perfection and Lodge Phoenix remain unresponded. I believe that there must be some one somewhere who would have a trace of information on the Minchins which would help me get forward. Any assistance will be gratefully acknowledged and will be extremely valuable. I also request you to kindly browse through our website http://uk.geocities.com/lodge_minchin . Available information about the lodge is reproduced in the page About Us/A brief History / The Minchin heritage. The URL is http://uk.geocities.com/lodge_minchin/heritage.htm Sincerely and fraternally, J.M.I. Sait PM and Web Master Minchinites sait@asianetindia.com
