Brothers, we all know that it's a new year and I feel that we all need to come together and make a bond pattern so that all brothers can keep in mind the real meaning of Friendship and Brotherly Love. What I'm saying is that " there are some that don't care about that". Those are the brothers that done masonary for show. That has become a problem and it looks bad on the us who's doing right. Please e-mail me brothers so i can get a better understanding of why this happens. Thanks. Bro. Johnson

Message:: I am researching the mausoleum for Alexander Montgomery on the campus of San Francisco Theological Seminary. Montgomery was an active and generous Mason who gave much to the Seminary and was buried in this structure. One of the stained-glass windows portrays a songbook open to the tune "Messiah," which was used variously for mainly two hymns, "Rock of Ages, cleft for me," and "Take my life and let it be." I would like to know whether Masonic songbooks from the 1880s and 1890s contain either of these songs, i.e whether it was the practice for Masons to sing such hymns, and if so what tunes they might be set to, and the bibliographical information on the relevant songbooks.

I did not think of the obligation as seriously, as I believe now, I might have. That said, I am sure I am only one of millions who have entered in a similar frame of mind. I have since done a little reading and now ask myself the question, whither now. The Rev. Joseph I. Mallow, C.S.P. has placed information on the net entitled May Catholics be Masons? I imagine that you have read it. While I am not a Catholic, I am a Christian and much of what he has to say concerns me. Below in italics are three of the points he has made: 1. Freemasonry has a peculiar unsectarian, naturalistic character, by which theoretically and practically it undermines the Christian faith, first in its members and through them in the rest of society, creating religious indifferentism and contempt for orthodoxy and ecclesiastical authority. The idea of God which emerges, as one reads the Bible, is unmistakably that of the creator and upholder of all things, both seen and unseen. The Grand Geometrician, Most High and Grand Architect of the Universe are in no sense that I can find made clear. Those titles could easily refer to Lucifer son of the morning for all one can tell. 2. The inscrutable secrecy and the oaths of secrecy and fidelity to Masonry and Masonic work, cannot be justified in their scope, their object, or their form, and cannot, therefore, induce obligation. It makes no sense to me for an organization whose guiding principals are 'brotherly love, relief and truth" to require such oaths of secrecy and fidelity. I have considered the reasons given for 'having secrets' but the examples I have seen are such as one would encounter in Rotary, Kinsmen or within a church. 3. Such societies involve a grave danger for the security and tranquillity of the sate and for the spiritual health of souls. Human nature being what it is, no organization however noble it's principals, can escape abuse and wrongdoing by some if it's members . That I see as the danger. The author of Inside the Brotherhood has presented material that accords exactly with my concern. He freely acknowledges the noble principles and the fact that most freemasons and men of good character, but unfortunately the reputaion of such an organization suffer's from the wrong-doing of a small number of it's members. Some brother's simply 'write-off' the material in this book but that does nothing to clear the record. Only openess can do that. Surely if we demand and need openness in our government we should expect no less of the various private organizations to which we may be members. The legal fraternity are fond of the expression "It is not enough that justice be done, it must be seen to be done". Thus it is clear to me that secrecy of any kind should be limited to that which is absolutely necessary to protect, for example individual privacy and in special circumstances the national interest. And, how many times in the latter case has this been abused. Implicit in Masonic teaching is the notion the a man may hope to go to The Grand Lodge in the Sky on the basis of his good works. According to the Scriptures by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, Ephesians 2:8. This is a fundamental tenet of the Christian faith and clearly at variance with Masonic teaching. Finally, there is the claim that Freemasonry is not a religion. To my practical mind that is stretching the definition of religion considerably. According to Collins Dictionary of the English Language religion is; 1. Belief in, worship of, or obedience to a supernatural power or powers considered to be divine or to have control of human destiny; 2. Any formal or institutionalized expression of such belief; 3. The attitude and feeling of one who believes in a transcendent and controlling power or powers. Can it be honestly denied that Freemasonry teaches non of these? Your thoughts please?
