Student Life Committees

Below is a listing of standing committees or boards, with membership open to the faculty, that have an impact on the work of the Division of Student Life.

Academic Performance, Committee on (CAP)
      Scope: CAP is concerned with the academic performance of undergraduates and may make recommendations to the faculty on such matters as minimum scholastic standards, examinations, and grading. The committee acts with power on petitions from individual undergraduate students relating to exceptions to established academic standards and reviews the records of undergraduate students at the conclusion of each regular examination period.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty appointments to the CAP are coordinated by the faculty Committee on Nominations.

Athletic Board
      Scope: The Athletic Board, composed of faculty members, alumni/ae, students, and ex-officio members of the Administration, is appointed by the President to advise on matters of policy and procedure related to the Institute's athletic program.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty with an interest in joining the Athletic Board should contact either Candace Royer, Department Head and Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation, or the President's Office at 617-253-5912/3.

Campus Activities Complex Advisory Board (CACAB)
      Scope: The CACAB is a representative advisory group that gives advice and direction to the director of CAC and his staff. The CACAB is consulted and participates in all major initiatives within CAC including staff search committees, mission and program changes, strategic planning, and budget development and priority setting.
      Faculty Membership: The Committee on Student Life is consulted on all faculty appointments to the CACAB. To express interest please contact either Phillip Walsh, Department Head and Director of the Campus Activities Complex, at 617-253-3913, or talk with the Chair of the Committee on Student Life.

Campus Alcohol Advisory Board (CAAB)
      Scope: CAAB pairs members of MIT's students, staff, and faculty with City of Cambridge officials and members of the surrounding community. It's mission is to promote responsible behavior and reduce underage drinking on and off campus. As an organization, it has the ability to discuss and make recommendations on issues related to alcohol and to develop collaboration and encourage new initiatives and projects related to alcohol.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty with an interest in joining CAAB should contact Associate Dean Danny Trujillo at 617-253-3276.

Campus Dining Board
      Scope: Review and provide advice on the general direct of campus dining and the services being provided through it to the community.
      Faculty Membership: By appointment of Dean Larry Benedict. Faculty who are interested should express their interest to Director of Campus Dining Rich Berlin at 617-253-4875.

Discipline, Committee on (COD)
      Scope: The Committee on Discipline (COD) shall consider such cases of alleged misconduct by students as shall be brought to its attention.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty appointments to the COD are coordinated by the faculty Committee on Nominations.

Hobby Shop Committee
      Scope: The Committee on the Hobby Shop encourages and promotes the use of the Hobby Shop by students.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty with an interest in joining the Athletic Board should contact either Phillip Walsh, Director of the Campus Activities Complex, or the President's Office at 617-253-5912/3.

Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgendered (LBGT) Issues Group
      Scope: The LBGT Issues Group is a committee of faculty, staff, students, and alumni who are LBGT or just plain friendly that seeks to foster a safe and welcoming environment and to ensure MIT's educational mission is upheld for all students regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
      Faculty Membership: Membership on the Issues Group is open. Please contact lbgt@MIT (W20-549; 617-253-6777) for more information.

Public Service Center (PSC) Steering Committee
      Scope: The PSC Steering Committee meets at least once a semester as an open discussion among staff, students, faculty, and community members about the MIT Public Service Center activities and the ways it can improve.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty with an interest in joining the Steering Committee should contact Assistant Dean Sally Susnowitz at 617-258-7344.

Race Relations, Campus Committee on
      Scope: The Committee on Campus Race Relations is charged with fostering better relations among the races of people at MIT and helping the community realize the benefits of its cultural and racial diversity. Members are appointed from the senior administration, faculty, staff, and student body and include people with different racial and cultural backgrounds. The committee should work with the various racial and ethnic groups to develop an overview of issues and concerns as well as opportunities for promoting better relations on campus. The committee has several responsibilities, including stimulating and coordinating a systematic action agenda for improving race relations on campus, developing and distributing relevant resource guides, and administering a modest grants program to support projects and activities that promote multicultural understanding and positive race relations.
      Faculty Membership: Faculty are appointed by President Vest.

Student Life, Committee on
      Scope: The Committee on Student Life (CSL) shall be concerned with the quality of the learning and living environment at MIT, with specific attention to issues of community. Among other tasks, the committee considers proposals that would change or modify policies pertinent to student life and makes recommendations to the Faculty and the Dean for Student Life.
