Access to MIT: A Guide to Facilities for the Handicapped

This document was prepared by the MIT planning Office. Copies are available at the personnel Office (E19-226) and the Information Office (7-121). It was posted on the web by the Disabilities Services Office.

Access to MIT

This guide is designed for people with ambulatory disabilities. It is one of a series of steps being taken to make the MIT campus accessible to handicapped people.

Since it is not practical to show either all existing architectural barriers or all possible routes, this guide presents the major means of circulation and the barriers most likely to be encountered. Although this guide deals with the general needs of the temporarily or permanently handicapped, MIT is prepared to respond to the special problems of individuals.

Academic or General Concerns

For assistance in dealing with academic problems or help in defining problems, contact Student Assistance Services, Room 5-106, x3-4861.

Service Fraternity

You can find helpful and knowledgeable students in Alpha phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity, located in the Student Center, room W20-415, x3-3788.

Medical Department

For general counseling and referral contact Institute personal Assistance program, Room E23-344, x3-4911. For general information and Internal Medicine/Nurse practitioner appointments, Building E23, x3-4481, 8:30 am-5 pm.

Architectural Barriers

If you encounter any barriers or have any requirements or recommendations relating to the physical environment, contact the the Safety Office, room E19-207, x3-4736; or Student Assistance Services, room 5-106, x3-4861, facilities NE49-2300 x 8-7011.

Housing

For special housing needs, contact Dean for Student Affairs, room 7-133, x3-4051.

physical Education

All sports are open to anyone able to participate. The Athletic Department is interested in assisting anyone wishing to use MIT's athletic facilities. Athletic Department, Room W32-109, x3-4497.

Locked Doors

Some doors are locked after 6 pm and on weekends. For entry information, contact Campus police, Building W31, x3-2996.

parking

There are several handicapped parking spaces in MIT parking facilities (East Garage, Herman Garage, and the Amherst St., plasma Fusion Center, Westgate, Windsor St. and Main Lots). Anyone with a Massachusetts handicapped license plate may park in these handicapped spaces. If you do not have a handicapped plate and special parking arrangements are required for an extended period of time you may contact the Medical Department, Dr. Goldstein's Office, Room E23-291, x3-4488.

If special parking arrangements are required for the day, contact Campus police, Room W31-219, x8-6510, Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm.

Snow Removal

If additional snow removal is needed contact Operations Center, Room E19-135, x3-4948 (F-IXIT).

The MIT Museum

The MIT Museum welcomes all visitors. Access to the main museum facility is by ramp and elevator to the right of the main entrance at 265 Massachusetts Avenue. In addition the Museum will make every effort to accommodate special situations. please call x3-4444.
