State Name If the state name
is hyper-linked, it will take you to the homepage for that state at the GIS
Data Depot, which distributes much data that used to be available through
the U. S. Geological Survey. This includes countywide data, such as census
information, road and other transportation information.
Statewide Data
Bulleted List of statewide GIS
data, generally provided by state governments or state universities. Such
a database exists for almost every state, with the exception of the District
of Columbia. Dataset completeness varies widely from site to site. All
data is not free on every site, although most sites do provide at least
some free data (many provide extensive amounts of free data). Listed URLs
were correct at the time this page was created (3/10/2002); however, several
older pages from which this data was culled had a substantial number of
outdated links. If you find that a link is no longer serviceable, let
us know and we will do our best to update the bad link. If you know of
additional statewide data resources, we will gladly add them. Contact
us.
Regional Data
Bulleted List of regional GIS data within the
state. Usually covers a much smaller administrative area (i.e., a county)
or geographic region (i.e. the Mojave Desert). As a general rule of thumb,
regional sites have more extensive datasets, often providing remotely sensed
or topically specific (e.g. biologic, geologic, or agricultural) data. Regional
GIS data sites are much more difficult to compile than statewide sites,
since one tends not to find them unless one is looking for data in that
particular region. As such, this list reflects regional data sites used
by individuals at M. I. T., who have contributed their knowledge and expertise.
Additional regional data links are welcome, we would be glad to add them
to the page.
