Wireless ad-hoc networking allows 802.11 enabled devices to communicate to each other without the presence of a connection to internet (modems, access points, etc.). This gives users the ability to share files and folders, given that they are on the same ad-hoc network.
The setup for an ad-hoc network is fairly simple with most 802.11 WLAN cards. Different brands of cards have different interfaces, but the steps should be the same.
Get into the card's configuration/settings tool. For some cards this can be found somewhere in the Network Connections Panel, other cards have separate config tools.
Within the config tool there should be a Network Type setting (it may be an advanced setting), if the card is connecting to an access point this setting will be set to Infrastructure, to make an ad-hoc connection change this setting to Ad-hoc or Peer-to-Peer.
There should also be a setting for a Network Name or ESSID. Any name will due for an ad-hoc network, just make sure that each device that will be connecting to this ad-hoc network is set with the exact same network name.
