Prof. Degao Zheng is the director of the Shanghai Branch of China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD), a leading institute of urban planning and design in China. Prof. Zheng has conducted major planning projects ranging from regional to city and site scales throughout the country, including the Yangtze River Delta City System Plan, Beijing City Masterplan, strategic spatial development plans for Shanghai and Wuhan, and comprehensive development plan for Shanghai's two international airport zones. He is also the planning consultant of the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Ministry of Housing and Rural and Urban Construction.

Drawing from the two major recent projects, Prof. Zheng will illustrate how his team translates Shanghai's and Wuhan's mid-to-long term development goals into concrete spatial planning and economic development strategies. These strategies seek to meet the new challenges that are becoming typical for China's largest cities, including the slowing down of economic growth, tightening constraints of land and other resources, and diversifying public expectations of planning. Prof. Zheng will also explain how his team use new technologies such as the Big Data and urban region geo-economics simulation to assist the planning process. These practices reflect a new trend in the transition of the planning profession in China.
