Undergraduate Program

MIT undergraduates have several options including:

  • Course XI Major with a specialization in Environmental Policy and Planning
  • The Institute-wide Minor in Public Policy with a concentration in Environmental Policy
  • Research Assistantships and Internships

The Environmental Policy Group encourages MIT undergraduates to consider pre-professional training in environmental planning and management. There are several tracks a student can pursue within Course XI (Urban Studies and Planning) or within the Institute-wide, interdisciplinary, Public Policy minor. While we do not attempt to cover all the degree requirements and list all possible courses in this brochure, we do want to draw special attention to two options: the Course XI Major with a specialization in Environmental Policy and Planning, and the Institute-wide Minor in Public Policy with a concentration in Environmental Policy.

Course XI Major with a Specialization in Environmental Policy and Planning

This is the pre-professional path we suggest for students interested in a career in natural resource management or environmental planning. It teaches the tools and techniques of sustainable development and is excellent preparation for a wide range of professional careers in the environmental field (including a five year S.B.-MCP.) Course XI majors are expected to complete five required subjects, 57 units of planned electives, and all the General Institute Requirements. The Environmental Policy faculty is available to help undergraduates select appropriate planned electives. Field work experience is encouraged, but not required.

The Institute-wide Minor in Public Policy with a Concentration in Environmental Policy

MIT has established a Public Policy Minor under the sponsor ship of Course XI and Course XVII (Political Science). Students in the minor are expected to take two subjects that introduce them to the justification for government action, a course covering Methods of Policy Anal y sis, and three subjects in an area of specialization. Again, the Environmental Policy faculty is avail able to suggest appropriate subjects for a public policy minor. A public policy minor is especially appropriate for MIT undergraduates majoring in engineering or science, but who have an interest in the public policy implications of their work. The website for Public Policy minors is: http://web.mit.edu/polisci/publicpolicy/.

Environmental policy subjects are offered in many MIT departments. Five that might be especially interesting for engineering and science majors are:

11.007Resolving Public Disputes
11.122Environment and Society
12.308J/12.848J/15.023JGlobal Climate Change: Economics, Science, and Policy
17.413Policy Choice and Global Environmental Issues
17.32Environmental Politics and Policy

Research Assistantships and Internships

There are opportunities for undergraduates to participate as re search assistants to the Environmental Policy faculty (through the campus-wide Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program) or as interns in public agencies or firms involved in environmental policy analyses of various kinds. EPG faculty are avail able to help MIT undergraduates find relevant and challenging assignments of both kinds.
