MUSIC announces new Field Directors Appointments

MUSIC announces the appointment of two USGS research scientists as USGS MUSIC Field Directors.

David MattsonDr. David Mattson
Ph.D., Research Wildlife Biologist
USGS Southwest Biological Science Center
Lecturer and Visiting Senior Scientist at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Dr. Stephen Faulkner
Ph.D., Research Ecologist
USGS National Wetlands Research Center

Their principal responsibilities will be to develop field-based projects and ensure the integration of MUSIC interns into USGS project teams. Dr. Mattson and Dr. Faulkner will actively help to advise and supervise MUSIC interns working on USGS projects and as appropriate other MUSIC projects. They will advise MUSIC co-directors, Prof. Lawrence Susskind and Dr. Herman Karl, and help to guide the strategic direction of MUSIC. With Dr. Karl, they will coordinate projects among the three USGS regions (Eastern, Central and Western), helping to ensure that MUSIC is an effective national resource for USGS and its sister Department of the Interior bureaus, and other agency partners and collaborators. Dr. Mattson and Dr. Faulkner will contribute to the the theory of the role of science in collaborative approaches to natural resources management, ecosystem restoration, adaptive management, and environmental policy and to new forms of civic engagement and collaborative governance. The theory will be tested through hypothesis-driven research projects. The results of on-the-ground projects (action research) and theory building contributions will be disseminated as journal articles, reports, working papers, workshops, and presentations.
