Scholars-In-Residence
MUSIC Scholars-in-Residence are appointed each year. These distinguished scientists, often on assignment from federal agencies, participate as graduate student research advisors and research staff members. They have an academic appointment as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP). A panel comprised of Prof. Lawrence Susskind, Prof. Judith Layzer, Dr. Herman Karl, and Prof. Lawrence Vale (ex officio), Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning will review the qualifications of each applicant and make final decisions.
Applicants are required to submit a curriculum vita and three letters of recommendation. They should indicate the research they are interested in pursuing during their residency. MUSIC encourages inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches to research questions and the testing of hypotheses. For the range of research issues on which MUSIC has focused over the past few years, refer to the biographies of the MUSIC faculty and the products and activities featured on the MUSIC web site. International applicants must have a Ph.D. and must be sponsored by the MIT International Scholars Office or another sponsoring agency to secure a visa. The length of the residency is negotiable. However, it is expected that most appointments will be for at least one semester, and can be up to one year. DUSP charges an administrative fee of $1500 per term with the summer counting as a term. MUSIC will also consider hosting short-term visitors (1-2 weeks) interested in learning about the program. Those interested in applying for this program should contact Dr. Herman Karl (hkarl@mit.edu; 617-324-0262).
