Ksenia Mokrushina. MCP 2012

Research topic: Olympic Host Cities: Planning for a Greater Post-Olympic Urban Sustainability

Taking the premise that the Olympics can be a catalyst of long-term urban sustainability transformation in host cities, this research analyzes how Olympic host cities can use Olympic planning process to achieve lasting sustainability outcomes well beyond the Games. Ksenia is studying Vancouver’s recent experience of integrating sustainability agenda in planning for and hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and whether it helped to ensure long-term sustainability legacy. The case study looks at what exactly was achieved and how the City made these outcomes possible from the point of view of planning practices and governance set-up. Ksenia draws policy lessons for future sports-events host cities in developing countries, particularly for Sochi, Russia - her hometown which will be hosting the 2014 Winter Games.
