IDRP/UNDP Decentralization Project
Professor Bish Sanyal

This project, in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been completed. The project involved IDRP faculty, Master's and Ph.D. students, and SPURS Fellows in examination of the role of decentralization in good governance.

Field work with local institutions was carried out in Brazil, Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire, Honduras, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Thailand, and Uganda.

Participants analyzed successful cases to identify what elements constitute "best practice." A series of student reports and a UNDP publication were issued in 1999. Though the project has been completed, the work remains of interest to the faculty involved and the research conducted is the basis for student theses and dissertations.

Professor Tendler also collaborated with faculty and students in the IDRP/UNDP Decentralization Project.
