Educational Focus

The UIS educational program is aimed at students who want to be part of a new breed of IT-savvy planners taking up the challenge of integrating information-rich planning with tomorrow's planning needs. These professionals and researchers are comfortable with IT while retaining the imagination and insight needed to harness knowledge-based tools for use in the fluid and multi-faceted world of urban and regional planning. They see their career goals as developing and implementing information systems that aid planners and policy makers, while enhancing our understanding of urban and regional planning processes.

At the Masters level, we aim to give students a sufficient understanding of technology, information management and modeling so that they can use these new resources wisely; be articulate and persuasive in promoting and influencing their designs; and be imaginative in constructing information-based decision processes and public participation mechanisms.

At the PhD level, we educate students who are ready to become heavily involved in research on tools and techniques, the information infrastructures that support them, and the information-based restructuring of urban and regional planning techniques.
