Bike Share at MIT

Vision

Techbikes program aims to provide a decentralized fleet of bicycles for use by MIT students, faculty, and staff. They can better meet their mobility needs with the addition of a bike share program to their range of transportation options. Like ZipCar, Techbikes aims to save time, promote environmental consciousness and better health: a “utility as valuable and as easy to use as electricity, heat and hot water.”

At MIT, bike share programs can be successful because of our sprawling campus, which covers 156 acres along the Charles River, stretching for nearly 1 mile along the Charles River, with numerous off-campus destinations in the Boston metropolitan area. With urban redevelopment project such as the Main Street/Lafayette Square improvement, Vassar Street improvement, and the Charles River Basin Plan, the MIT campus and surrounding areas are becoming more bike-friendly as well. ”

With registered users, a card-accessed locking system, and tracking of bike availability, Techbikes hopes to provide a sustainable system in an urban environment.
