Collins" To: Multiple recipients of list LM_NET Subject: First Elementary School Web Announcing the First Web Server in the World Built by Elementary School Students http://hillside.coled.umn.edu/ On Tuesday, March 15, sixth grade students at Hillside Elementary school began the construction of their own Web Server. As far as we know, this is the very first World Wide Web server in the world constructed by elementary-school students. The students learned how to set up HTML pages by setting up signature pages which contain text, scanned pictures, and pictures drawn with KidPix. The server itself is a Macintosh LC running MacHTTP software (so please be gentle--it can't handle a heavy load). This is part of a joint project of the University of Minnesota and Hillside Elementary School to integrate the use of the Internet into the curriculum of elementary level education. Our objective is to have students not just look at the Internet and take information from it, but to participate in building and shaping their own small part of the Information Superhighway. You're welcome to visit the Hillside Web and browse. Each student has their own e-mail address. It would be a great thrill to the kids if you send them a personal e-mail comment if you visit their page. Stephen E. School Kids : Subject: First Elementary School Web Due to the overwhelming number of people that have forwarded me this I need to write and disagree, if for no other reason then to decrease the incomming mail in my mailbox. :) As it now says on the Hillside Home Page: "Early reports that this was the first Elementary Web Server have proven to be over optimistic. The first to be set up was at Grand River Elementary School." And they even set up a link to our page which was very nice of them. The 5th Graders at Grand River Elementary School all have their own page and their own E-Mail account. They tell a little about themselves and would love to get mail from any and all of you. In particular we are hoping people will communicate with us about science and maybe we can do some on-line experiments.
