A great turnout, excellent facility, world-class facilitation, and a huge pile of work got done. The cast: * Frank Alla, stalwart attendee and expert on trust * Deb Church-Smith, who's kept this together from Day One * Rita Cleary, founder, The Learning Circle, Visions of a Better World Foundation * Cathy Cordes, CFM, Inc., Volunteer of the Day, agreeing to handle registration--Yea, Cathy!!! * Richard Dale, already hard at work coordinating the invitees * Georges Drouin, all the way from Montreal! and thinking about QuebecNet * Manny Elkind, world's living expert on cognitive styles * Lisa Fisher, Publicity Director, Oliver Wight Publications * Mike Grandfield, from Bolt, Beranek & Newman, and representing Mass. Telecomm Council * John Marchiony, triumphant following the successful opening of The Computer Museum's "Networked Planet" must-see event * George Mokray, environmental expert, newly arrived * Lyn Montague, our educator in residence, who brought "extravagant flowers because what we're trying to do is so extravagant" * Jan Nickerson, ubiquitous CFO and process minder * Charlene O'Brien, OD expert who reminded us to walk-our-collaborative talk * Will Roberts, Internet afficianado and real estate expert * Myrna Schultz, who knows everyone in Massachusetts * Nova Spivack, who knows everything * Jeff Stamps, agenda designer, among other things * David Straus, founder of Interaction Associates, who deserves a Standing O for OutStanding Facilitation * Kyle Williams, Steelcase host providing the setting * Eric Won, MIT Community Fellows Program, and * Jessica Lipnack (me) * Regrets from Comdex attendees Bill Taylor, Fast Company editor, and Alex Randall, founder, Boston Computer Exchange, and East/West Foundation; David Owen, new father (and the genius who came up with the idea to hold it at The Computer Museum); Miles Fidelman, founder of The Center for Civic Networking; Nick Donohue, New England Regional Educational Lab, Frank Reece, US TeleCenters CEO Extraordinaire; Allan Cohen, from CSC Index, our first sponsor; Mel King, founder of the MIT Community Fellows Program; Roy Rezac, VP of Engineering, Symbiotics, Inc., Ellen Herman, team expert from Harvard Business School; Marion Metcalf, National Performance Review networker; Harry Saal, CEO, Smart Vally Inc., who messaged that he was with us "in spirit" and will be one of our "beamed in" speakers on Jan. 23; and David Stephenson, who first introduced the "common-wealth" theme to our planning. (Forgive me if I've missed anyone--we would have needed a hall if everyone had made it!). So, how could we fail with this brilliant core group? We didn't miss a beat--from the opening moments, when we thrashed through purpose, to the very end, when we did an evaluation of the day, followed by brainstorming a list of invitees. Some details: We've decided on a new name for the event: MassNet: Collaboration for the Commonwealth We roughed out the agenda for Jan 23, which includes a mix of brief speakers, i.e., they will speak only briefly, and real-time collaboration and networking among the invitees, that we hope will lead to an ongoing effort to increase collaboration among Bay State businesses, government, and "social sector," to use Drucker's categories (see his ATLANTIC article, "Six Priorities for Change"). We developed a policy for the invitation list and established a subgroup to coordinate lists: Max of 200 people, excluding press, with emphasis on people who've already undertaken cross-sectoral collaboration. Note: each sponsor automatically has 3 seats. **All organizers are encouraged to send in their registrations immediately so as to insure a seat. If you've been to a meeting, you're an organizer. If you haven't, it's not too late to become one!** We set a price for the event: $75/person to cover costs, with the understanding that some invitees will need to pay on a sliding scale. We distributed the invite letter--message me or call the TNI office 617/965-3340 for the final draft--and Cathy agreed to draft the registration form (as well as receive and handle all the registrations--"no sweat," she said). Cathy will distribute the registration form via e-mail or fax: message her directly: ccordes@world.std.com, or call her at 617/275-5258. We've moved into subgroups to get the work done (message debtni@world.std.com for the full list of committee members with contact info): Agenda for Jan. 23, 1995: Frank A., Manny, Lisa, Charlene, Myrna, Jeff, David Straus Collaboration Group (to identify successful cross-sectoral initiatives that can be represented at the event and coordinate the invite list): Rita, Richard, George Mokray Technology Group (to further our links with the NII and related efforts in Massachusetts *and* to help with the Drucker/Harry Saal teleconferences): Nova, Richard, John, Will, Jessica Finance, including bank account set-up: Rita, David Straus, Jan (?) Sponsors: Jessica, Jan Logistics: Deb, Cathy All in all, a highly successful 8 hours. Thanks to John, we'll be meeting again on Dec. 14, 1994, from 1-4 PM at The Computer Museum. We're all invited to take a turbo tour of the NETWORKED PLANET at the end of the meeting. This meeting will allow all of us to get a feel for the space. Special note to those on the cc: list here--please message me if you'd like to be added to the automatic distribution list for all messages (or deleted from the distribution altogether). And stay posted! Amazing to see what has grown from that summer night when a dozen and a half people got together at our house. Thanks one and all and take care, Jessica
