MassNet/SmartState: Networking People and Technology ---DRAFT! TALKING NOTES ONLY--- Our vision for the dawn of the 21st century is a vibrant regional economy and civic community powered by networking people and technology. The purpose of the MassNet/SmartState initiative is to increase the common-wealth by enhancing the capacity and practice of cooperation and collaboration in Massachusetts businesses, institutions, agencies, and communities while developing a leading edge, friendly, and accessible regional networking infrastructure. A meeting is being called for November 14, 1994, [at the Computer Museum in Boston] to catalyze the formation of a self-supporting MassNet/SmartState organization to plan, organize, and publicize this initiative. The name, vision, purpose, and leadership of this effort are only draft place holders to stimulate startup and will all be on the agenda for the November 14 meeting. While we hope awareness, enthusiasm, and a viable organization emerges from the day, participants will in any case find a rich learning environment full of new information, ideas, and connections. MassNet/SmartState is inspired by California's Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network and one of its primary initiatives, Smart Valley, Inc. Smart Valley's mission is "to create an electronic community by developing an advanced information infrastructure and the collective ability to use it." Smart Valley is a business-led effort to benefit the whole community by revitalizing education; addressing health care cost and quality; making local government more responsive; connecting people; keeping business; and creating jobs. This effort is currently being coordinated by The Networking Institute and a group of volunteers. We are looking for a small group of participant-sponsors to support the first public meeting [at the Computer Museum].
