Participants: Rich Carpenter, Charlotte Kahn, Jessica Lipnack, Marsha Orr, David Stephenson. II. Fundraising brainstorming The discussion divided fundraising and development into two phases, an immediate one to carry us through the launch, and longer term. A. Short-term: 1. For immediate seed money, decided to write an open letter to conference attendees, signed by: principal corporate sponsors, Jessica and Jeff, Rich Carpenter and members of Advisory Council, urging them to become members at various levels:$25, $50, $100, $250, $500, with exemptions for some non-profits and others providing in-kind support. As before, checks should be made out to Interaction Institute for Social Change until we are registered. 2. Categories for short-term budget: staff person, space (already volunteered by BCS!), postage, communications, convenings, telecommunications costs: phone, fax, Internet; equipment costs: computer, modem, fax; indirect costs: workers comp, taxes, etc.; travel; printing; costs of incorporating: trademark search, registering TM, registering with Sec. of State as a 501 (c) 3. ballpark total: $50,000 for 6 months. 3. Incorporate and register as 501 (c) 3 so we can solicit contributions. B. Long-term budget: 1. Rich suggested that we might base membership on formula such as number of employees, gross revenues, etc. 2. Charlotte emphasized that before we can approach foundations and major corporate donors, we must make a serious fundraising kit that will impress them with MassNet's vision and the caliber of participants. Contents: fact sheet; short position/concept paper; list of people (with titles), who attended the conference and sponsors; excerpts from the presentations 3. Identified some targets: Associated Grantmakers: networking is focus of next meeting; DEC; NYNEX; Fidelity; Lotus. 4. Dee Hock sat in, and suggested that, as with VISA's startup phase, we challenge each committee to be self funding. 5. Also discussed other potential revenue sources, such as: fee for services, such as on-line yellow pages, on-line network guide, calendar of events, voluntary "finders fee" tithe for work resulting from MassNet contacts. III. Next Meeting: CSC Index, 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, 12pm, February 14th. ---> David Stephenson ******************************************************************** W.
